Merlin stayed standing as Elaine sat, hands going to his pockets. It was moments like these he wished he had a big wizard staff to lean on and look authoritative. Maybe he should grow his beard to his knees again. "What about Little John?" he said again to prompt her.
"He is missing," Elaine replied, "and nobody seems to care that they haven't heard from him."
"What makes you say that?"
She narrowed her eyes slightly. "Because they don't. They worry when I point it out, but then ten minutes later all concern has melted away. I don't know why I am excepted from this. Perhaps it is because we are in love." It was said so matter-of-factly, with just an edge of daring Merlin to try and pick that apart.
"Are you sure-" he began, because he wasn't someone to deny a dare, and the look Elaine gave him snapped with fury so much that he held up his hands and backed down. "How is dreamwalking going to help you, then? It didn't help you find Marian."
"Yes, but I did get a good read of her mental state. I want to find the Sheriff, because if anybody has one of the Merry Men locked away, it is him. I want to find him and pick apart his mind until I find out where he is hiding my John." Her true feelings were leaking out as she spoke, getting worried and angry and hurt.
Merlin sighed. "Dreamwalking isn't good for you," he said. "Being separated from your body and mind isn't healthy for you. I worry for your- to be frank- for your sanity if you keep on doing this."
Elaine got to her feet, unable to sit still. "But I love him," she implored, going to Merlin and leaning towards him. "You know what it's like to love someone this much. I must know where he is!"
For a moment, Merlin's eyes flicked to Luna. He was so used to separating mortal business from god business that it felt like a transgression to have this be so open to her. But then, she was a transgression, from the mortal world to the immortal. He gave her a slightly apologetic look.
Elaine followed his gaze and turned also to look at Luna, but for a different reason. She went to the mortal and sank down next to her. "You understand, don't you? When you love someone, truly love them, won't you risk anything for them? Tell him the risk is worth it!"
