"No," Genesis said quickly, not wanting Beti to go down some path of apologies she certainly didn't need to me. "No need for any sorry to me. I get what you mean, about only being able to wait." She considered whether some story of her own would help, and decided it surely couldn't hurt.
"I've got a son," she told Beti, not having mentioned that to anyone at work before. "He's thirteen now, but when I was in prison he got snatched by someone from my old life. The wardens told me about it, but that's all I got. So I had to sit in my cell and wonder what was happening to my baby out there, had to know that I couldn't even help to find him. I knew that he needed me but all I could do was wait to hear some news. So, yeah, I get that feeling, how all the time in the world just gives you nothing but terrible thoughts. Doesn't make you a bad person to get stuck in those thoughts, just makes you human."
