Marcie looked between them, touched at their kindness. "Thank you," she said softly. "I was too scared to get in a stranger's car or get trapped on the subway. I couldn't stop." She carefully kicked off the ballet flats. Her heels were rubbed raw and her soles throbbed, and one of her pinky toes had bled a little. Truthfully, a hot bath would suit her more, but she was a bit scared of falling asleep in it. "I don't mind sleeping on the couch, it's okay."
