“Tragos says so.” She nodded and gave him a smile in return. Kaden was so beautiful when he smiled. “For now, I think the less I know about what you are doing, the better. Plausible deniability.”
She let out a heavy breath and took both Kaden’s hands tightly in hers. She was having equal trouble letting go of him now.
Kaden’s nod was a dual purpose nod; yes if Tragos said so, then it would happen, he had to put his belief in that, and yes it was definitely better that she didn’t know where they were heading for a while. He grabbed her hands in return, looking down at them for a moment, at how small her hands were in comparison. They didn’t seem quite as small as they had when she was dying, but they still made him want to protect her.
“Don’t let any gods mess you round while we’re gone, ok?” he asked. “But like, be careful? And if you ever see Cy around just run. I want you to be ok, you gotta be ok.”
“Of course.” Marcie nodded. She didn’t want to put herself into harm’s way, and there was no way she was going anywhere near Cy or any of the others. Not a chance. “I promise. Now, are you hungry? Of course you are.” She got up, taking her hands back, but couldn’t resist ruffling his sleepy hair before she went into the kitchen, tucking her robe in tighter as she went. And then she could go through the motions of making bagels and cooking bacon instead of thinking about how fast time was going by her, taking her boys away with it.
