Marcie leaned over Kaden with her arms folded across her body, and tilted her head slightly. “Good morning, starshine. You want breakfast?” she asked. There was half a bag of chips open on the floor still, crumbs scattered somewhat. “I have bagels and cream cheese and bacon, and orange juice?”
That was a lot of breakfast options, and, impressed, Kaden cracked his other eye open. Usually, breakfast was cereal (though he preferred toast, bread didn’t tend to survive for long in their damp and mouldy house) but bagels… and bacon… “Yeah ‘aight,” he said, sitting up, and excavating the earphone from his ear, which was a little sore from sleeping on it. He didn’t move to get up though, still tangled in blankets but with his feet now on the floor, and he looked up at Marcie and tried to think of breakfast but couldn’t help but think that he didn’t know when he was gonna see her again, and he didn’t have it in him this early in the morning to keep it all from showing on his face. This was all a little bit devastating.
“Oh honey,” Marcie sighed, and sat down next to him to pull him into a hug, because who knew when she’d be able to do this again. His face just said everything she was feeling. “Kay. You’re so sweet. You’ll be okay.” Rubbing his back, she closed her eyes against a wave of sadness, not wanting to let go of him.
