Kaden smiled faintly, still processing. “The best girl,” he echoed her words from before, but it still sounded strange. The genuine fear he’d felt when he first saw Hecuba, when he’d known that she’d done the impossible and followed him from Astoria to the Hole, when he’d realised that she must be more than just a dog, it had not been fear for his safety but fear of the unknown. But Luna made it sound like Hecuba was very known, and the knowing threatened to make her ordinary, and Hecuba wasn’t ordinary. She shouldn’t be ordinary.
