WHO: Apollo and Calliope
WHEN: Friday night
WHERE: Calliope's place
WHAT: Dinner, wine and conversation
WARNINGS: TBA

‘You don’t need to romance me’ Calliope had said, which Apollo thought was a bit ridiculous. Gorgeous Calliope deserved to be spoiled, deserved the most delicious red wine he could find, deserved top quality attention. Especially since some of the other Muses were such hard work at the moment. He’d had such an argument with Melpomene over healing the scratches on her face, and she’d only relented and let him when he told her that he’d already healed Aphrodite, and she was walking round like nothing ever happened. And then there was Clio, just…

Why did people fight so hard against him looking after them? It was exhausting.

So Calliope was getting fine wine, and the finest Italian takeout money could buy, and of course, his glorious self.

Calliope made sure the house was clean and her daughter was out of it before Apollo appeared. As much as Theo was familiar with the god, Calliope didn't want to have her around right now, not for this conversation anyway.

She didn't dress up, but she didn't dress down either. She still had to be presentable after all.

"Musagetes," she greeted him as she opened the door with a smile, leaning in for a kiss on the cheek. "Come in. Oh lovely, you did bring wine. I'll get some glasses."

"True to my word," Apollo said, beaming as he kissed her cheek, his hand curled warmly around her shoulder. "You're looking gorgeous," he told her, setting the wine down on the counter as he unhooked the bag of food from where it hung around his wrist. "As ever."

"Thank you, darling. How are you faring, back in the land of the living?" she asked, setting glasses down on the counter next to the wine bottle. She gave him a slightly appraising look, wanting to assess how he was, but he looked as shining and golden and perfect as ever. He'd just been kind of quiet for the last month.

"Oh that," said Apollo, like he was over it and never thought about dying or Tartarus at all ever. "Plenty of upperworld things to keep me busy, and - funny story - I met the most incredible woman on my way back. I've been showing her the best of what this city has to offer," he flashed his white teeth at her as he opened the bottle, pouring out a generous serving of the deep red wine, her glass first.

"Ah." Calliope nodded. "Right. Well that explains it then. Another rags to riches story, is it?" Of course Apollo had found someone to lose himself in. That was what he did when things got too difficult with the gods. She took the glass he'd poured and raised it to him in a slightly sardonic toast.

"Something like that," Apollo said, highly pleased with himself for his choice in a mortal to fall for, and his choice of wine. He toasted Calliope, not missing her sardonic look but breezing brightly over it, drinking with relish. "And you, beautiful? Any love on the horizon?"

"Not for me thanks," Calliope replied with a laugh. "I've seen what love can do. I have Theo living with me, and that is all the company I need for now." She nodded towards the food Apollo had brought. "We should eat before it gets cold."

Taking another gulp of her wine, she turned to the cupboard to fetch plates. She was not eating Italian food out of a carton like an animal, there was far too much tomato in that sauce, it would stain.

"Well, you know if you ever need my company..." Apollo smiled suggestively, wrapping an arm around her and giving her another kiss on her cheek, lingering slightly on his way to her cutlery draw. "The offer's always there."

"What a gentleman." Calliope threw an amused look Apollo's way. She might appear sensible and self-possessed from the outside, but he was still her mentor, lord, lover. She still loved him as much as any of the others did.

Once the food was dished up and they sat down, Calliope looked across the table at Apollo. He was going a good job of looking unruffled, but she knew her sisters. "So what's been going on with you and my sister muses?" she asked, sipping her wine. She knew something was up, she just hadn't gotten to the bottom of it yet. "Have you been setting cats among the pigeons again?"

"Not all of them, come on," Apollo said, breaking off a piece of focaccia garlic bread to dip the corner into his sauce. "Melpomene's just extra at the moment, she'll settle back in the long run, and Clio's been treating me like she thinks I'm Hermes ever since I arrived in this city, and now she's upset about Lucifer too - with good reason, the bastard - but I'm just trying to look out for her and she's sensitive about it, so I'm giving her space. But everything's great with me and Erato and Urania and Thalia. And you?" he offered her the garlic bread and a raised eyebrow, checking that she wasn't unhappy with him either.

She raised an eyebrow, but she didn't contradict him. "Clio is very happy with her new beau. It's for the better that you don't interfere. And Melpomene has a lot on her mind. Is Artemis or yourself planning to be at the birth? I worry about her."

A frown creased her forehead, her concerns about her pregnant sister coming up in her heart again. "You said yourself, she is... extra. Early on she expressed to me a conviction that this birth would take her life. And now, with her heart broken... I don't want to see that come to pass. Can you?" She met Apollo's eyes with all her love for Melpomene evident. "Can you see that eventuality?" If he could set her mind at ease on this point...

Apollo held up his hands to profess his innocence - he wasn't interfering with Clio's new beau! At all! Here everyone was thinking the worst of him. Clio was happy and that was all he wanted.

As for Melpomene, well - he dropped his hand to pick up his wine again. "She won't die," he said, with certainty. "If Artemis is still playing with her Sheriff, I'll be there. Even if Artemis is back, I'll be there. She will not die. No fucking way Ares' kid is taking her."

Calliope nodded with relief. "Thank you," she said with feeling. "That means a lot. You have lifted a burden from my shoulders." She reached out to hold Apollo's hand for a moment, then started eating her meal. It really was quite good. Apollo always knew the best food places.

She wanted to ask about the curse and his death, but she knew better than to do it right now. She smiled and drank her wine and enjoyed his company over the food instead, biding her time for the right moment.

Apollo shook his head at her words, unable to believe she'd ever worry that he'd let any of them die. Not now, not when he was in the same city, when he could watch over them. He'd been nearly three thousand miles away when Clio had died, those years ago, and that car was something he hadn't seen coming because he hadn't been looking and well... he was looking now, as hard as he could, which was still painfully weak compared to the prophecies he'd been able to manage, back in the distant past.

Death wasn't getting its grubby hands on any of his Muses, that's all he was saying. That Lucifer and Ares had touched them was bad enough. Ugh.

He made a mental note to check in with Erato, make sure she wasn't sleeping her way into trouble. At least he didn't have to worry about that with Urania and Calliope. He thought a little wistfully about Polyhymnia, too - the last he'd heard from her was a postcard from the town near the nunnery she'd joined.

They finished dinner over lighter talk - Theo, some of the things his boys were getting up to - and Apollo emptied the last of the bottle into their glasses. "Shall we take this party to the couch?" he suggested, already gathering both glasses as he stood up.

"Certainly." Calliope rose too. She had been careful not to overindulge on dinner, despite how delicious it was. It was very carb-y, and she didn't like feeling too heavy after a meal. Especially when Apollo was visiting.

She accepted her glass back as they sat down, and sighed with satisfaction. "Scrumptious, thank you," she said, crossing her legs and leaning back into the corner of the sofa, twiddling a lock of hair between her fingers. "Have you taken your mortal girl to that Italian place? I'm sure she would enjoy it." Of course she was fishing for more information on this girl: who she was, when they met, how they were getting along.

"Not that one, not yet," Apollo said, getting comfortable and letting his knees fall open, taking up three times the space on the couch that Calliope did. He stretched his arm across the back of the couch too, his hand resting behind her shoulders. "Her name is Cin, she only lets me take her out once a week, and there's so many places this city has to offer."

Calliope raised her brows slightly. "Only once a week? My my, are you losing your touch?" she teased, knocking her knee against his. So, a mortal who didn't tumble directly into Apollo's bed was certainly a much more attractive proposition for him. He always did prefer a challenge. And appropriate that he would be tempted by Sin. Calliope sipped her wine, feeling buzzed and warm and comfortable. "So how did you find your newest treasure, then?"

Losing his touch! He opened his mouth to very much dispute that, before he realised she was kidding. He pressed his knee back against hers, amused by the joke. Losing his touch indeed! "She found me, actually. When I came back," his words were distasteful as he said it, came back, ugh, death sucked. "-It was in this disgusting, disgusting part of the city. Cin rescued me and drove me home." He didn't mention that he'd paid her six grand to do it. Not a lot of romance in that.

Calliope frowned slightly. "Rescued you?" she repeated. "Darling, where were you? What happened to you?" She leaned forward towards him, intent to have an answer. Melpomene either hadn't wanted to or hadn't been able to tell her.

Apollo's look darkened, despite Calliope starting to close the distance between them, which was never a thing to frown about. "Tartarus," he said. "And then some piece of shit neighbourhood on the edge of Queens."

He finished off half his glass, just to get the taste of the words out of his mouth, but he thought it might take more than a $200 bottle of wine to manage that.

Cin's mouth, he thought, could do it... But he hadn't gone there yet.

Calliope inhaled sharply. Tartarus. That was not a place a god like Apollo should go. He would never have ended up there on his own. "Who sent you there?" she asked, a thread of anger in her words.

"Hermes," Apollo picked up the thread of anger in her voice and spun with it. "The little bastard - because I'd broken his face, because of what he'd done to Clio. He thought it was funny."

How many gods in New York were not in a feud with Apollo? It seemed he was not making many friends. Still, the thought that Hermes had treated Apollo in such a contemptuous manner made Calliope, narrow her eyes with contempt of her own. "That is despicable," she said, lifting her chin with a jerk. "So that is why you were gone for so long. Hermes was keeping you. While we all fretted and worried, he was laughing."

Apollo growled deep in his throat - absolute wanker Hermes! - and reached out to catch Calliope's defiant chin. "At least he hasn't gone near any of you again," he said. "At least he's smart enough to know what I'll do to him if he does."

Calliope was smart enough to know Hermes had no reason to approach any of them, and also to know that Apollo was just as fond of proud rhetoric as Hermes was. She didn't pull away, though, just held Apollo's gaze and thought of the lengths she would go to to defend her sisters too. "He's smart enough to be done with it," she agreed. "He wouldn't try it."

"He better be," Apollo said, holding Calliope's gaze in turn for a couple of silent, intense moments before he leaned forward and kissed her delicious, winestained lips. Hermes could get fucked - just - not by any of the Muses.

It had been a while since she and Apollo had done this. Unlike some of her sisters, she did not crave his attention, did not flaunt herself to gain it. That said, when it was given, she would not deny it. Apollo was her lord, and always had been. She understood why Clio feared his direct attention.

She leaned into the kiss, because it had been a while since anyone, not just Apollo, and she was starting to remember what it was like to desire someone like this.

This, this was so much better than talking about death and Tartarus and Hermes, this was better than talking about anything. Calliope was so gorgeous, so well put together, so level-headed and strong, it was a joy to kiss her. Especially after half a bottle of wine, especially after the run of terrible luck he'd been having. She leaned into him, and it was all the encouragement he needed to take it deeper.

Calliope placed a hand on his leg as she closed her eyes. This was what she needed. A bit of relief after being so worried about Melpomene; and why not? Why shouldn't she be a little indulgent? She had no problems asking for sex.

She pulled back a little, realising she was making out on a sofa like a mortal teenager. "Bedroom?" she suggested, finding his hand and curling her fingers around his. She knew what she wanted, she was confident and efficient, not given to giggling and flirting like Erato did. And right now, she wanted her Musagetes between her thighs.

Apollo had no problems making out like a mortal teenager, but the bedroom would be better. He stood, pulled off his coat and his shirt in two smooth motions and left them on the couch while he reached out a hand to help her up, and to pull her closer for another kiss. It was such a relief not to have walked into another upbraiding, he was definitely going to show her his gratitude.

She raised her hand to his bare chest as he kissed her, the other keeping hold of his hand. His kiss was good, he felt good and smelled good, and she didnt want to waste time. She pulled back and tugged lightly on his hand to lead him towards her bedroom.

Oddly, sometimes she didn't know what to say in these situations, but sometimes a smile and a suggestive glance was much more eloquent.

For Apollo, the poetry of her body spoke volumes, and as they entered her bedroom he caught her face in his hands, kissing her deeply as he continued to walk her backwards toward her bed. "Beautiful Calliope," he praised, his mouth on her throat as his hands pushed the buttons of her shirt through their buttonholes, one after another until her shirt opened completely. Apollo hummed in satisfaction at the sight, kissing the top of her breasts as his wide hands wrapped around her hips.

That was an epithet she would never get tired of hearing. Calliope tipped her head back with a soft moan, reaching behind her to unclasp her bra and let it fall to the floor with her shirt. "My lord," she breathed, his touch bringing every nerve ending to life.

"My Muse, my Calliope." Oh hot, sexy, brilliant Calliope. Apollo smiled brightly as he lunged forward to kiss her again, both of his hands around her face for the beginning of the kiss before they started moving down. The soft breasts of the first of his Muses beneath his hands made him hard in his pants, always, and he pressed himself closer against her, so she could feel what power she had on him.

Hearing that made her melt. How long since she had been someone's muse, truly? His hands on her breasts were so warm, tantalising, and she reached for his waistband to pull open his fly so she could reach in and touch what he needed her to feel.

"It has," Calliope agreed, his touch leaving goosebumps in its wake. She knew what she wanted, and getting them both naked was the first step. Once that was done, she drew him to the bed, backing down onto it, bringing him with her to keep kissing him as he covered her body with his. As she looked up at him, the downlight in the room was directly behind his head, making him look, for a moment, as if he was glowing.
