Will had made his way back to the apartment early, since Alan had indicated he wasn’t home, just to give himself a chance to be prepared for this conversation, but when he got there, it was pretty clear that nobody had been there since he’d left. There were still empty beer bottles in the kitchen and an old pizza box on the counter. He felt a twinge of annoyance as he put them out of sight, because staying away from this apartment to give Alan space had clearly not been required, and he felt a bit stupid for having done it. Worse, they’d been paying rent on a space nobody had been using.
So he’d cleaned up a little bit for lack of something better to do, and grabbed a bunch of fresh clothes to take back with him, stuffed in a backpack, and then sat down on the sofa to wait. When the door opened, he looked up, biting the inside of his lip.
Alan looked the same, maybe a bit tired. “Where have you been?” Will asked, getting up and going to the kitchen to put the kettle on so they didn’t have to look at each other right away.
