WHO Freyja
WHEN Friday / Saturday
WHERE Washougal, Washington
WHAT Run ins with old friends
WARNINGS sexual references, talk of a rather tempestuous romance
The next night, Freyja had a girl's night planned. Three of them were going out to see and movie and do cocktails after, and she'd told Jothi (with a wink) not to wait up too late for her. He told her his own evening was going to involve a couple night classes at the gym and that (a wink of his own) he'd try not to have more fun than her. But by the time she'd gotten to the movies and checked her phone, Freyja found a message from one of her friends. They'd gone out for breakfast together and both had food poisoning, and they were sorry for cancelling so late but... nature had been calling all day. Freyja, with a sigh, sent a text back to tell them to get well soon, and then wandered around the still open mall for a bit. She bought herself a new gold necklace before deciding to have some dinner while she was out, since cocktails were no longer on the ticket. When she got home almost an hour later, the living room light was on, the glow leaking through the gaps in the curtain. Inside, the TV was off and Jothi was no longer sitting on the couch. (They always left that light on when they went out, letting it act as added security. It almost seemed foolish, as there wasn’t much crime in this part of town.) Inside, Freyja put her keys down on the kitchen table next to Honkers. He knew he wasn’t allowed to be on the kitchen table and yet there he was, staring her down, daring her to tell him he wasn’t the king of this castle. “Fine,” she told the grey monster. “You win this time.” And, to be fair, probably every other time. She just couldn’t resist his ridiculous face. So much for her great willpower. Freyja sat down on the couch and began to untie her boot laces, ready to be free of their confines now that she was in for the night. She’d just put her legs up on the couch when she thought she heard a sound down the other end of the house. She frowned, sitting up straighter to listen. In her socks – and now armed with one of the (usually decorative but always ready) swords from the wall – Freyja padded down the dark hallway quickly and noted the light that slipped its way under the door of Jothi’s office. Perhaps he'd decided not to go to the gym after all. She lowered the sword. But, as she came closer, she heard sounds that were unmistakable to a goddess whose domain was sex. No, she told herself in the hallway. No, that’s not even possible. A moan that she recognised, a moan that Freyja heard made for her almost daily. Freyja threw open the door violently and, on the couch, Jothi wrenched himself suddenly away from- “Meredith??” Freyja demanded, glaring at the two naked people who had just parted, who were sheened with sweat and breathing hard. “Oh my god, Freya,” she said, scrambling to her feet and grabbing for her shirt. “This isn’t- We weren’t!” Freyja turned her open-mouthed shock to Jothi, who was collecting his clothes up as well, while opening and closing his mouth as though to speak. “Frey, it’s not-” “If you tell me this isn’t what it looks like,” Freyja hissed, pointing the sword directly at him, “then I am going to cut your head off and put it on a pike!” “Freya, I’m so sorry,” said Meredith, her shirt now on as she grabbed her underwear. “We didn’t want you to find out like this!” Freyja wanted to grab her by the throat. She wanted to lift her into the air and throw her back into the bookcase. She wanted to scream and rage but all she could think was, I am the goddess of beauty and love! She looked at Jothi with hurt disbelief, unable to decide whether she was shocked, furious, heartbroken, or offended most of all. I am a blessed goddess! I am the most beautiful of the Aesir and you’ve tossed me away for Meredith!? Freyja threw the sword down and it clattered against the wooden floorboards that she and Jothi had installed themselves over a very long and stressful weekend. It had meant something, the hard work they’d put into it, the hard work of improving their family home together. “The mistake that you have made,” Freyja told him, shaking with anger, “will cost you everything.” Then she turned and strode back down the hall, jamming her feet into her boots without tying them back up, and then grabbing her keys. Honkers meowed at her. She didn’t push him off the table. By the time Jothi came running out to try and talk to her, Freyja was already outside at the car, her thin sweater too little for the weather but her own emotions keeping the cold at bay. She slammed the door behind her and blocked out his treacherous words. She didn’t really know where she was going, but crying in a car was the only option she had. Jothi had never seen her cry before, and for good reason. The tears that streamed down her cheeks were golden red, shimmering and catching the headlights of cars coming in the other direction. Where they hit the jumper they would stain. Where they hit solid surfaces, they would dry to golden flakes. It was chance (or was it?) that took her past the hotel Sobek was staying in, and she pulled into the parking lot as she remembered his room number. Her banging on his door was not quiet or patient and when he opened it, he looked angry and then confused. Freyja’s cheeks were painted with the remains of her golden tears, making her glow in the bulb light. “So fuck me then,” she demanded, pushing him back inside. “Fuck me like you mean it.” Sobek grabbed hold of the back of Freyja's neck and dragged her against him, crushing their lips together. |
