WHO: Apollo and Cin
WHEN: The night after her came back to life, the night before he heals Marcie
WHERE: The most expensive parts of NYC (apart from the Hole, obviously)
WHAT: "Not a date"
WARNINGS: Apollo's shirt. Fucking hell.

Apollo was early for his date with Cin, partially because he so needed to see her again and partially because he was afraid Athena was going to burst back into his life and fuck things up further.

Tomorrow was dedicated to his boys, and then, he supposed, he had to go and deal with the little bitch Marcie, but tonight?

Tonight was all for Cin. To discover more about her, to open the door to his world and marvel at her as she stepped into it.

He drove through her neighbourhood, curiously, his Corvette parting the waters of the flooded streets, headlights revealing the overgrown, wild and trashed state of the place. The car disturbed the worlds fattest and most rabid looking racoon as he went past - its eyes glinted demonically and it hissed, like it could take on a 'Vette and a sun god, before it scurried back into the trash.

He hadn't taken it in much last night, too shook from his fight back to life, but now. Now, well, he was shook all over again. What a dump! What a place to be dumped. He shuddered, and turned up the heat in his car.

Cin's house, too, seemed worse than the night before. Maybe everything looked worse in sixty thousand dollar headlights. He pulled up into her driveway, wheels trailing water behind them, and stepped out of the car clad in Versace silk, the golden medallion covering his back like a sun made out of golden flowers.

He knocked on her door, stomach thrilled with anticipation, as he peeled a little flacking paint from the jamb.

What was the outfit to wear when you knew you were going somewhere nice, but also didn't want the other person to think it was a date. Cin wanted to look hot - obviously - but she really didn't want Archie to think it was for his benefit.

Cin was pretty sure she didn't know how to walk that line.

In the end she picked a brightly colored dress she always enjoyed which had no cleavage at all, even if it did have a lot of leg. The mustard coloured coat she threw over it and buttoned up reached her calves anyway, and most of the night she'd be sitting in a restaurant.

When she pulled the door open and saw the prick standing there in a very loud shirt, with a sports car standing out in the middle of the Hole like nothing else could, Cin made a face at him. "You look like you're tryna get robbed again."

"And you look like a glory of geometric abstraction," Apollo said, shaking his head as he grinned in wonder. "Bam! The way that thing hits your eyes. I love it!" He stepped back, extending his arm out toward his car, which did look a little like it was crouching rather nervously between her house and the next. "You ready for a night you're never going to forget?"

Cin finished buttoning up her coat against the cold weather, raising her eyebrow at his comment about 'the glory of geometric abstraction', whatever the hell that meant.

"Let's hope you can live up to your own hype," Cin told him, pulling the door shut behind her and coming down the stairs. (Unbeknownst to Cin, Jake and Brody had pushed themselves up against the living room window to watch what was going on, Jake mouthing 'wow' at the car.)

"Let us hope," said Apollo, with the pure confidence of someone who doesn't need hope at all. He opened the door for her, smiling down at her (she was such an attractive amount shorter than he was) as she stepped in, despite the sardonic look of disbelief she gave him. Over the door of the car, he gave the boys watching them a cheerful wave, and then slid comfortably into the driver's seat. "We have an audience," he said, pointing her attention back toward the window. "Your brothers?"

Cin looked up to the window and repressed a sigh before making a shooing gesture at them. "My brothers," she agreed.

The inside of his car was really nice and she ran her fingers over the leather seat beside her thigh. "Cool car," she said, although it was said as though she didn't really care, as though it were just a throw away statement.

She had that perfect, apathetically cool attitude of someone who'd grown up rich, utterly astonishing to find in someone who lived here, like this. She was no gaping, wide-eyed girl from the gutter pulled into the light, and Apollo knew it was going to be a challenge to make her visibly impressed.

He was, absolutely, up for that challenge. "You want to drive it later?" he asked, casually, keeping it understated (for a given value of understated...) as he flicked on the music. It was a playlist he'd curated specially; a few of the groups she'd mentioned last night, a few of his favourites of a similar genre, a few pieces that spanned genre with their genius (some of which he'd composed and sang himself, not that he was going to bring that up unless she noticed, and asked).

"Sure," Cin told him, with a casual little shrug, but imagining how cool this thing would feel to drive already. "You so confident I won't wrap this thing around a lamppost?"

"I am," Apollo said with an easy smile, cutting through a puddle and sending up an arc of water as high as the car. "It's a cool car, like you said. Why would you destroy it?" He turned another corner, enjoying the effect it had on the puddles. "Besides, the insurance on this thing is crazy."

Apollo bit his tongue between his teeth in excitement, grinning wickedly at her. Everything she said elevated her higher. "I look forward to finding out," he said, and pressed his foot down hard on the accelerator, pressing them both back into their seats as he did an illegal pass of the cars ahead to shoot onto the expressway.

Cin let the force of movement press her back into the seat and she closed her eyes, imagining that the car was taking her away from all of her problems: all the money shit, all the Barak shit, all the job shit.

They didn't talk much on the expressway, Apollo turned up the music to match the speed and let the experience be enough, let her soak it all in for a while. There'd be plenty of time for talking when they arrived at the restaurant - he'd acquired a table at Eleven Madison Park. He wanted to start with something classic and elegant, and built up bit by bit to the private helicopter tour idea. He wanted to wow her, not, like, completely overwhelm her.

Still, a last minute table, plus the chefs tasting menu for the two of them, plus drinks, plus valet parking so neither had to get cold - Apollo was planning to drop about a grand on dinner tonight.

They pulled up right outside the restaurant and Apollo moved swiftly out of the car, tossing the keys to the valet before opening Cin's door, and offering her hand to help her out.

As they pulled up in the expensive car outside of the expensive restaurant, Cin was starting to think she was a little out of her depth. Her coat was looking so ragged at the edges, and as soon as she walked inside this place she knew that they would all see that. They would all look at her and know she didn't belong there.

So she took Archie's offered hand in the hopes that it might make her feel steadier.

But his hand was delicate and slender and nothing like Barak's hand, and it brought her no steadiness - at least not mentally.

Inside the restaurant there was a little room before all the tables and that was where Cin paused, turning to look at Archie and keeping her voice low, the anger at being on the back foot simmering in it. "Have you brought me here to make me look dumb? In front of all your retarded rich friends?"

Apollo turned to her too, his hands slipping her coat off her shoulders, revealing that magnificent choice in dress. "No," he said, and he said it both gently, and in his god-of-truth voice, honest and sincere. "I have no intention of making you look dumb. You look magnificent."

Cin kept her eyes on his as he spoke and then she nodded, just a little, before reaching up to flick her curls back and free any that had found their way under her collar. She did look magnificent, even if that wasn't a word she would ever have used.

"Still not a date," she warned him.

The dress might be a bit bright for a place like this, but fuck anyone who looked at her.

Apollo smirked at her, proud, and handed her coat to the doorman, and his black woolen sweep of a coat as well. They looked a matching pair, he thought, catching every light in the place, and he offered his arm for her to take so they could make their into the main room together. Percy, the head waiter who knew the young Goldenhawk through business dealings with his grandfather, greeted them warmly and asked after the family, commenting (as most people did) that the bloodline rang strong in Archer, for he was almost the spit of his grandfather.

Percy seated them at a private table with a high window rising behind them, hovering behind Cin to push her chair in for her, and a second waiter presented Apollo with a wine list and Cin with a white box. The box was bound with handcrafted string and opened to reveal two savory black and white cookies that kicked off the meal.

Cin opened the present she'd been given with a frown and looked inside at the two cookies. She looked back up at Archie and, instead of letting it be known that there was a lot going on here tonight, she said, "maybe you should tell them someone invented plates."

Apollo laughed, reaching out and plucking one of the cookies from the box. A tasty blend of cheddar and apple with a white butter and black vegetable ash glaze. "Try it," he suggested, his demeanor relaxed and encouraging. "All their flavours are inspired by New York, see what you think."

Inspired by New York, perhaps, but, he suspected, not her New York.

Cin took a bite of the pretentious New York cookie and only just managed not to make a face when she discovered it to be unexpectedly savory. It tasted like cheesy apple kinda, and it wasn't bad. It was weird though. "Is that the flavour of exhaust and hobos then? Better than expected."

Pleased with that little glimmer of approval, Apollo beamed, and after scanning his eyes down the wine list he passed it over. "Do you want to decide what we're drinking?" he offered, hoping for more insights into her life. "Anything you like. What do you usually drink when you're out?"

Cin looked at the wine list and her eyes widened at the prices before she could stop them. "I don't usually drink hundred dollar bottles of wine," Cin told him, because it was a good answer. She sighed with slight frustration and looked at him seriously. "I drink cheap shit, because in case you somehow missed it, places like this aren't coming outta my paycheck."

"So you'll drink hundred dollar bottles of wine tonight," Apollo smiled, brightness over her frustration. "Preferences - red, white? The champagne-" he refrained from rattling off its long, French, daunting name, and just pointed at where it sat on the wine list "-is particularly good."

"A bottle of that champagne then," Cin said, closing the menu and putting it back down on the table. "To start with." She'd seen the price on that bottle and was massively looking forward to seeing the crazy stuff rich people drank.

"I like the sound of that - let's make this night a party," Apollo beamed rays of sunlight with his smile, and summoned Percy back with a glance, chattily ordering the bottle, though without letting the conversation get into any depth - he was here for Cin, not Percy.

The bottle arrived just before the hors d’oeuvres arrived on a hexagonal board of white oak; a truffle mousse fashioned to look like a single chestnut each, five slices of five different apples that were to be dipped in a foie gras caramel and then almond apple crumble. There were two tiny slices of potato tart, and on a bed of stones sat two miniature game pies, venison, liver and blood sausage, harking back to the time game meat was a big deal in New York.

Apollo poured Cin a tall glass of champagne. She looked like she was going to need it.

It was the dumb fucking pair of nuts on the table that almost sent Cin off. Just... some fucking nuts. On a ridiculous plate. Yes, there were other things that were clearly food but even those seemed ridiculous.

"All the money in the world," said Cin as she picked up her wine glass, "and you've ordered us a raw acorns." She took a large drink from the wine, and found it much less sweet than she was expecting. It tasted expensive though (even if that didn't necessarily mean it tasted the best.) "Boujie people are a fuckin' ride."

The waiter who'd bought them the plate (well - the board) went visibly blank, paid far too much to reveal his reactions to the customers, but he was definitely taking this tidbit back to the kitchens - already a few of the servers were trying to work out the dynamic here. Apollo ignored him completely, entertained by everything Cin said. "You're a vision of skepticism," he said, and picked up the chestnut to throw into his mouth. It crunched slightly on the outside, the inside as creamy as anything. "Mmm, squishy damn acorn," he said, leaning back in his chair.

Cin made a face when he ate the nut, but it passed as soon as she realised it wasn't what it seemed. She reached out and took the other, biting down into it. Oh, squishy was correct, and sort of mushroomy. "Okay," she conceeded after swallowing, "that's not bad."

She reached out across the grab what looked like a slice of apple and bit into it before frowning. "Oh," she said, "that one's just apple."

"Not everything," Cin agreed, swiping another piece of apple in the sauce next to it. "But a lot of things are." Like Archie. She was pretty sure Archie was a trick, but wasn't sure how it worked yet.

She was so clever, too. Apollo didn't disagree with her, but he did refill their glasses, though neither had made it to the bottom. "What do you do with your days, Cin?" he asked, sliding the bottle back into its bath of ice. "When you're not rescuing men from swamps?"

Cin picked up the refilled glass and then watched him as she drank it, not removing it from her lips until it was half empty again. "I work," Cin told him as she put her glass back down. "Have you heard of jobs, or does daddy's trust fund pretty much cover everything?"

Apollo had had so many different jobs in his time, and he wanted to tell her about all of them, but with this youthful face? She'd never believe it. "I've done a job or two in my time," he said instead, still amused by her, and the eye contact she hadn't dropped as she drank. "Are you enjoying the trust fund champagne, should I top you up again?"

"Brilliant," Apollo returned her smile, noting the edge and letting it thrill him as he refilled her glass. So, she didn't want to talk about her work. Alright, he liked a girl with an air of mystery. "I hope you're enjoying the trust fund dinner, too. Are you ready for the cheesecake," he leaned forward conspiratorially and warned her in a whisper "this one is a trick," as the waiter returned with two slices of smoked sturgeon cheesecake topped with caviar.

Caviar, it turned out, looked gross. It was fish eggs, Cin knew that much, but even knowing it was expensive and boujie as shit still made her not really want to put fish eggs into her mouth.

But she also didn't want to look like a pussy, and so she cut off a slice of the fish cheesecake (what the fuck, what was wrong with these people) with a good addition of caviar on it and brought it to her mouth.

It was definitely fishy. It wasn't gross, but the texture of the caviar was a little off-putting.

After swallowing, Cin shrugged. "It's okay," she conceeded.
