Marian didn't have anything in her to smile at the joke. Maybe in a few days she would remember about smiling. Right now all Marian could do was slowly eat the food spoonful by spoonful, like she was a child or an invalid. Honestly, she felt like both. Each swallow hurt (but it wasn't intolerable) and it was amazing to have something real and solid inside of her.
Eventually she turned her head gently away from the spoon. "That's all," she said quietly. "I can't. I just- I want to sleep forever."
