WHO: Patrick and Mairead [NPC]
WHAT: Hello there
WHEN: Saturday
WHERE: Patrick's office
It had been a while before Patrick had been to work. He had a pile of paperwork on his desk that he had to attend to, and he was spending Saturday working through it. He had spent over three hours in silence so when someone leaned into his door and said hello, he jumped a little out of his chair and looked up at the person with wide eyes.
He recognised the girl immediately as coming from one of the families he was helping in their immigration process. "Hi," he said, smiling widely. "Mairead, isn't it?"
Mairead grinned in such a way it made her nose wrinkle. "My parents are down the hall with their lawyer and I'm bored."
Patrick chuckled and, glad for an interruption, he pushed his paperwork aside. Mairead was fourteen years old and he had spent a bit of time with her while visiting with her parents. She was a charming girl and her accent reminded him of home. Her family had fled the financial crisis in Ireland but they weren't having an easy job of it in New York either. Patrick was doing all he could to get them settled so they wouldn't be deported back to Ireland with nothing.
"Well I have cookies and tea," Patrick offered, pointing to his treat table. "Would you like some?"
Mairead skipped over to the table and she grabbed a cookie. "Thanks! They keep having meetings and it's boring. But they don't want to leave me at home because they keep reading about horrible things happening to people in the city in the newspaper."
"I don't blame them," Patrick said with a nod. "Well how about if they're in the with lawyers you can come visit me. We can always go for a walk! The park is a block away, want to go exploring?"
"Ooh, do they have falafel carts?!"
Patrick laughed and he stood to grab a cookie for himself. "They'll have something. We'll leave a note for your parents and then look for a food cart of some description."
