Urania had removed herself from all immortal sibling dramas early, instead slipping off to meet some of Apollo's new students. They were all so young, like stumbling horny foals, but that youth was exactly what Urania wanted. They might think themselves stubborn, but they were still so movable at this age.
She walked up to the first two she saw after getting a drink, and their conversation stilled. Even Urania, stand-offish and distant as she could be, drew mortals towards her. Erato was a bright shining star that enchanted everyone around her. Melpomene was like gravity- dragging people in because it was inevitable.
Urania herself was a distant nebula: something they knew was so beautiful and perfect, if only they could get close enough to truly capture it.
One of them offered her a drink and then looked down with embarrassment, realising she already had one. "What's your major?" she asked that one.
He perked up again. "I'm really focused on criminal law right now."
Urania didn't make a face, but it was only because her expression was usually a passive one. But she did turn away to the other boy. "Yours?"
"My name's Brad."
"I didn't ask for your name. I asked for your major."
"Well, it's law but I'm more about statutory law and-"
Urania raised her hand in front of his face and said: "I'm done."
She moved onto find another target. She was talking to another wannabe lawyer when she heard something over her shoulder, someone laughing, clearly teasing, as he said: "yeah, but this fuck wit's taking an astronomy class!"
Urania practically swiveled to find the subject of the mockery and saw everyone focused on a young dark haired man, who seemed to be taking his friend's words easily enough, raising his hands and making a beckoning gesture that said bring in on "Astronomy. Fuck, you can read our tea leaves next! Are you gay? Dude, you should just tell us if you're gay."
Urania passed through the partying youth like they were a sweaty desperate sea, until she stood in front of this boy and his friends.
"Astronomy," she said, eyes locked on his, drawing him to her like only a muse could. He nodded, seeming momentarily dazed.
Urania smiled at him, a genuine smile, a true smile, moon rising bright through autumn trees, and then reached out her hand to him. "Come with me," she said, "and let's have a drink."
She drew him off into a corner once they had a drink, and there the two of them talked stars. She flirted a little, partly because it helped to open him up, and partly because it was always intoxicating to talk to someone who loved the night sky.
