WHO The Saracen + Robin Hood
WHEN Tuesday night
WHERE Park
WHAT Mission failed
WARNINGS None
The unshakable feeling of dread overcame Leila as she sat at Robin’s chess table in the park. Gisborne’s less than subtle outburst online definitely had her ensnared in his trap. What move he decided to make now was precarious, and she felt like she was the one being watched now instead of her being the hunter. That was an unnerving feeling for her, on top of the layer of guilt that she failed a mission. Leila looked around to see if Robin was anywhere to be seen. She eyed the lady feeding pigeons on the park bench and squinted to be sure it wasn’t him hiding under another white-headed wig and scarf around his neck. She looked down at her watch, he was ten minutes late which was very unlike Robin, especially when he’d instructed her to be somewhere. As the seconds ticked away on her watch the more uncomfortable she became. Her heartbeat was in her throat as she closed her eyes to take a breath, but when she opened her eyes Robin was there looking back at the other end of the chess table and his eyes cut straight through her. His disappointment was obvious, and quite possibly anger. He didn’t even ask if she was alright, his first question as he dumped their usual set of rocks on the chess table. “What happened?” His voice seemed to lack it’s usual empathy, because Gisborne had struck a nerve. He’d already been bested once, but to be bested again by that goon, that rocked his own confidence. Leila took a deep breath. “I failed,” she said simply, she wasn’t going to lie about it. “Gisborne is far more perceptive than you or any of us realize.” Robin pushed one of the pieces forward and waited for her move. She in no way wanted to tell him that Gisborne had spiked her drink and made her delirious, that even as he took them back to the apartment building she felt small and alone as he hounded her to go back to an apartment she did not have. In minutes he’d discovered she didn’t live there, and she’d taken off in a run before he caught her. She touched her cheek which was not bruised anymore, but the sting it left behind from being caught struck her hard. “This doesn’t have anything to do with you and Much?” Robin asked, meeting her eyes with an intense gaze. When she didn’t answer right away, he knew, and he made another move on the board. “I told you to clear your head and not get bloody wrapped up with anything else.” Was he angry that her and Much were together? No, but it was horrible timing, and he was positive that it played a role in her not being on her A-game. He took one of the pieces and clenched into his palm. She’d blown her cover and cost them a chance at getting that bloody git right between the eyes. “I know,” Leila said simply, feeling that his trust in her had been broken. “I did what I could,” and she felt her throat tighten. This was exactly the reaction she’d wanted to avoid. “Not enough,” Robin said in a huff. His hand clenched tightly around the chess piece. “You were my one perfect trap,” his lips thinned as he let the chess piece go. She looked down and away as he said that, because she felt like he could let her go so easily and she wondered if she’d just fade away. She was so new, but without Robin, there was no existence, and for the first time in her life another man was competing with him. |
