Marcie looked back at her again, feeling a slight edge of mistrust. “Of course it isn’t. But that is mine and he stole it. There’s nothing else I lose by not having him in my life.” There was that superiority again. Hadn’t she made a life for herself here? Hadn’t she found Ares herself, when her parents didn’t think she could? She didn’t need Ares to help her find a place in this new community. She had met Athena, and Athena was going to introduce her to others. She would make it work, by herself.
Ares himself was like a wall, impenetrable, and growing thoroughly sick of this confrontation. He had other plans for this evening, that didn’t include a child he didn’t want hanging around and berating him over a mortal woman he barely remembered.
“Can someone come and get her the fuck out of here?” he said, going to the door and looking out to see if anyone was on hand.
