WHO Fairytales, Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm
WHEN Thursday afternoon
WHERE the Grimm residence
WHAT making amends, hopefully
WARNINGS tba

Good day! Would yourself and your brother be prepared to see me?

Wilhelm looked down at his phone, then across at Jacob, who was making them both some afternoon tea in their tidy kitchen. He had heard his brother express a willingness to listen to the goddess’ words before, but he wasn’t sure how forgiving he would immediately be- which presumably is why the lady was messaging him and not his brother.

His fingers hovered a moment over the screen.

Yes, I think so

Wonderful! I’m free now?

I think that this evening would be okay

He opened his mouth to talk to Jacob and ask him what time would be suitable, to prepare him a little, and was interrupted by a knock at the door. Carefully, he got up and opened it.

“Hello!” A tiny golden-haired woman stood there, dressed in tulle and embroidered flowers and carrying a basket. “I brought tarts!”

“Good afternoon,” Wilhelm replied with a perplexed frown, because he didn’t recognise the lady, although he could tell she was immortal. She was looking at him with a hopeful, expectant smile.

He looked back over his shoulder at Jacob. “Ah- Bruder, I think Fairytales has come to see us.”

As Fairytales - Elaine he remembered - moved past him, Jacob just shrugged right back at Wil. Honestly, maybe it was better she had just shown up, so he didn't have to panic about the time approaching.

He followed her into his own kitchen and he nodded, "set in our ways," he said, placing the teapot on the bench. "What uhm...kind of tarts?" Was this small talk? Fuck he was bad at this.

"Raspberry and apple," she said cheerfully, and looked from one brother to the other, her hands behind her back. She could sense the wariness from both of them, and looked down at her feet, doing her best to look as non-threatening as possible.

"Shall we sit?" Wil said quickly, grabbing a dish from the sideboard and bringing it to the table to set the tarts on, so he could put the basket to the side. Elaine sat down, smoothing her hands over the edge of the table in front of her.

"So... I suppose there is no point prevaricating," she said gently. "I'm here because I was hoping that I could convince you both that I'm not a threat to you, or anyone else." She didn't mention Greta by name, but she didn't need to.

Jacob sat, his body a little heavy. He remembered how terrified he had been when Fairytales had transformed into a dragon and threatened to kill everyone he loved, minus Ella who had, blessedly, not been there at the time.

"I...want to believe that," Jacob said, going right into it, since she was too. "But you were a dragon."

"Yyyes. I know. And I am dreadfully sorry about that." Elaine spread her fingers apologetically. "All I can say is that I was in a very bad place at the time, emotionally. Spiritually, I think. But as you can see, I'm literally not the same person any more." She gave a hopeful smile.

Wil glanced sideways at Jacob. "So, what was it that made you change then? Can you guarantee it won't happen again?" he asked. The tarts in front of them looked delicious, but could they trust they weren't poisoned?

Jacob stood and busied himself making tea, pouring boiling water over the leaves until the rich scent hit his nose. He carried it to the table and only then did he speak.

"I want to believe you, Elaine. I miss- I've missed you. But...as my brother asked, what made you change?"

She sat up straighter. "It is difficult to explain," she said, biting her lip thoughtfully. "After I died, I came back new. I wasn't... altogether... well. I tried, of course, but... Um. I think a piece of me was vanquished when Greta stabbed my heart. That is my best guess."

Wilhelm nodded slowly. It fit with her whole ethos, that wickedness could be slain by the pure of heart.

Jacob winced, because he hated to think of Greta being forced to do that. His poor girl, thrust into a situation she didn't want or understand, just because she was his daughter. Greta, who abhorred violence, but who had gone on a revenge spree against evildoers, ending in her killing Fairytales.

"So you're...better now?" he asked, pain written all over his face.

She clasped her hands together and rested them under her chin. "I'm stable...I am whole," she said, a small smile tugging at her lips. Of course, she had the other half of her heart in her life now, but she owed them the whole story.

"I don't know if you know," she began, "but after I was slain, I returned as a child for a small amount of time, before I aged up. I think that childishness never truly left me. I was in a home for a time, a few years, but then I was released, and... I can't quite remember exactly, but I drowned, and I ended up in Connecticut with a new body." She put her hands down in her lap. Wilhelm watched her with growing concern for her well being.

"I walked into the forest and made a home for myself. I can show you it, if you like, sometime, it's still there, but it gave me a long time to rebuild the parts of me that were missing. I suppose..." She let out a long breath. "I suppose the potential for darkness is still there within me, but I do not feel it. I feel... rested."

"Oh- Oh, Elaine, that must have been awful." Even as much pain as she had put them through, he hated imagining her in it. "That sounds nice, your new home. I think...I think we could do that. In awhile." He smiled at her then, the expression wavery, but there.

"Oh lovely. You will appreciate it, I am very sure. I've decided to rejoin the real world again anyway," Elaine said, helping herself to a tart and taking a big bite. Wilhelm let out a breath of relief and finally took one for himself.

Her joy at her True Love kept peeking out, like the sun shining behind a cloud. A smile wanted to be there. She was itching to be asked why!

"That's nice to hear," Wilhelm said, looking at Jacob again. "Isn't it, Jacob? Are you living in New York, then?"

"Yes, I am," she replied, "In Lancelot's house, because he's staying with Maid Marian for the time being. He's lonely, you see, rattling around in there all by himself."

Well that was unexpected. "Oh... You have... new friends?" Wil asked, not sure how to address it.

Jacob reached for a tart, and then nodded that it was indeed lovely. "It will be good to have you around again," he said with a smile. He was going to shoot an email to Greta to let her know though, just in case Greta decided to visit. Not that she visited much... It was safer for her to stay in Lebanon.

"Lancelot is staying with Maid Marian?"

"Oh, they were staying with me for a few weeks," Elaine said cheerfully. "They needed an escape from the real world for a time, same as me. But true love beckoned." She clasped her hands together and beamed.

"This sounds like a long story, should I get my notebook?" Wil asked, only partially in jest. Elaine laughed merrily at him.

"I hope... Well partly the reason I wanted to explain things to you both is- I'm getting married!"

Well that caught him out. "Oh! Really, that's wonderful!" And it was. Fairytales deserved to be happy, no matter what had gone on in the past. She has once been one of Jacob's close friends. He wanted good things for her.

"Who is the lucky person?"

"Well- he hasn't asked me yet. But he's going to!" Elaine sounded absolutely certain, and excited about it. "So, it's- Little John. He's so-" She thrilled at the thought of him.

Wilhelm looked Jacob. "Oh. Little John. Well, of course?" Spending time with Fairytales was always a rollercoaster.
