Roxanna, like every other college student, was counting down the days until her summer break. She'd talked to her mom last night, and they had planned to have her come home for a few weeks while she was out of school. She was really, really looking forward to it. She really missed her parents.
"Foxy Roxie," Jamie drawled, as he came into the dining room where she sat doing her homework.
She looked up and grinned. "You have a hickey on your neck, big man," she laughed.
Jamie snorted. "Of course I do. But I got laid, I'm not complaining."
"I would bet not," she agreed, scribbling down a few final notes in her staff notebook, before sitting back and sighing heavily. "I'm fucking hungry. And tired."
"Same," Jamie said. "Come on, I think there's leftover Chinese. We'll have that for a snack and look for some real dinner."
Roxanna laughed, and she was about to get up, when her phone started to ring. She glanced at the screen, confused. "It's a Washington area code, but it's not Mom or Dad. Weird." She connected the call and said, "Hello?" A pause. "Speaking, who is this?"
Jamie sat down next to her to wait, and he got an upclose view of the color drain from her face. "I don't understand," she said faintly. Jamie pulled a quizzical face, and she reached over without looking at him, grabbing his arm tightly.
"No...that can't be possible," she said, starting to tremble. "I just spoke to her. I spoke to her, she was fine." She listened for a few moments more. "Can I-can I please call you back tomorrow?" she said tightly. "Thank you."
Her fingers shook as she hung up, and she dropped her phone and stared at it like it was a viper. "Roxie?" Jamie asked.
Roxanna got up without saying a word, and Jamie followed her, now very worried. She had run into the music room, and he was hot on her heels. She slammed the door, fell to her knees, and screamed. It was a long, broken shriek of grief, and Jamie could see that she had started to cry.
Eventually, it trailed off into quieter sobs, and Jamie went to hold her. "My parents are dead," she whispered, gripping his arms like they would hold her to the world. "There was an accident, a fucking idiot drunk driver ran a stop sign and pushed them off the road."
"Christ, Roxie," Jamie said, and his heart broke for her. "I'm so sorry."
She nodded jerkily, drawing in big hiccuping breaths. "They're going to, uhm-they're going to call me back tomorrow. I'm going to have to-to go out there and deal with the house and everything, funeral arrangements-" She broke off and started to sob again.
Jamie lowered them both to the floor, and just held her as she sobbed. He couldn't even imagine what she was going through, he just knew that right now, she needed him to be there for her. And that, that he could do.
