"I really hope it won't come to that, but if she can't, then yes," Jesse agreed.
Sharp taps sounded from the front door, and Jesse scampered downstairs to let her in. "Come in, he's in the bedroom," he told her, closing the door and leading her upstairs.
"Hello, Nicholas," she said softly. "I'm sorry to hear you're not doing well, let's see if I can't see what's wrong." She held her hand out in front of her, much like she'd done with Jayden. Her eyes fell shut as she concentrated, and faint lines appeared on her forehead.
"Mama?" Jesse asked quietly.
"There's no magic present, that I can sense," she murmured. "I don't-no. It doesn't make any sense." She broke her trance-like state and opened her eyes. "I'm sorry. I wish I could have been more helpful."
