Iain had been working late at the shop tonight, trying to get as close to finishing his last project as possible. When he'd looked up again, everyone else had gone home, and he took that as a sign he should probably head that way too. After all, Norah would probably be needing him soon.
He shut off the lights and locked up behind himself, heading for the train station. He got off about two blocks from his house, and ducked into a bodega for a quick dinner and some cigarettes. (He smoked them on the balcony to try and hide the smell. He was hoping his sister hadn't noticed.)
He rounded the corner, and had gotten halfway up the block before he noticed her. Clad all in red and lounging against a tree, for all the world like she was the lady of the manor expecting a guest. Iain felt his heart lurch and his stomach flip. He hadn't seen Alexa in over three years, not since she'd signed their divorce papers and disappeared without a trace. He couldn't imagine how this little reunion might go, but he straightened his spine and kept walking anyway.
He finally stopped in front of the house, about two feet away from her. "Alexa," was all he said, because really, what else was he supposed to say?
