"Which is understandable," David agreed. "And I can understand that, because Nicholas wants to keep all of you safe. Plus Jesse's still in the hospital, and he'd probably get upset, which can't be good for his recovery."
His face went rather blank, but his eyes flicked to the side. "Mom was dead," he said quietly. "You were dead, and then...then you weren't, and you told me you didn't love me anymore.
