Who: Norah and NPC Devon [Narrative - Chapter 1]
When: Wednesday morning
Where: Coffee shop
What: Getting coffee

For Norah, it had been quite some time since she had been on a date. She didn't necessarily consider this little meet and greet a date, but her co-worker tried convincing her to make it that first 'let's get coffee' kind of date in order to break any tension. It had taken the last two and a half months for her to even warm up to the idea before she decided to go along with it. She would give it a shot, but she made no promises. Jonathan was clueless about her past failings as a girlfriend. Time and time again, it ended in heartbreak, bruises, and bitter memories. Each and every time, she left both emotionally and physically exhausted. Norah could never understand why she made such terrible choices in partners, but a resentful voice often tried to convince her it had been because of her parents. They had never been the ideal example of a relationship, after all.

When she woke up that morning she didn't have a clue what to wear. It was only coffee, but she didn't want to wear one of her usual early-morning warm-up outfits she wore to work. She didn't want to seem like a slob, but she also didn't want to wear something too nice and make it seem like she was trying to turn this into a real date. She finally settled on a happy medium somewhere between just-rolled-out-of-bed and slightly nicer than casual, while keeping her hair ready for work. As she looked in the mirror she thought she needed to let her hair grow out again. It was easy to manage now, but at the same time she missed having longer hair and putting it up into her 'ballerina bun'.

A faint song told her her phone was hidden beneath the pile of clothes on her bed. She scrambled to find it, "Oi, Jonathan! Sorry, my phone was playing hide and seek." She paused, looked at the time, and then answered, "Oh shite! Yeah, I'm out the door now. I'll only be a few minutes." She chuckled, "Yeah, tell him I'm running a little late and I'll be there ASAP. See ye efter!" She took one last look in the mirror and then sighed. She was as ready as she would ever be. She grabbed her bag and was out the door a tad later than she meant to be.

It took her about five minutes to get to the coffee shop. She scanned the crowd, looking for a young man in a red shirt. It didn't take long to find him waiting at a little table for two. She walked over and offered a sheepish smile, "Devon?"

The young man looked up at her and nodded, "Yeah, that's me. You're Norah?"

She nodded in return and then he waved at the seat across from him. "Sit down," he said with a smile.

Norah sat down in the chair and set her bag on the floor between her feet. "I'm so sorry I'm late. I got caught up in the cycle of what to wear and what not to wear. I've got work after, so I needed something comfortable," she explained.

Devon waved a hand in dismissal, "No, it's fine. Jonathan said you'd probably dress casual since you work today. He also told me how your like your coffee." He slid her cup toward her.

Norah just smiled and nodded, blushing faintly, "He knows me well."

Their conversation went on for the next hour. Simple things like work, friends, family. "Two big brothers, who tend to be rather protective of me," she warned. Norah wasn't about to go into detail about how protective they could be. She didn't need to scare him off before she decided whether she liked him or not.

When the time came to leave for work she apologized for needing to go so soon, "I'm sorry, I'll be late if I don't go right away. It was really nice meeting you."

"We should do this again," Devon agreed with a charming smile. He stood up and offered to help her out of her seat before they began walking toward the door together.

He had been nothing but polite, and he was cute. Norah had no qualms going out again, maybe on a real date next time. "Absolutely," she said with a smile.

"This weekend?"

"Yeah, I'm available Saturday. No work." Which meant she could dress more nicely.

"Great. I'll meet you here, seven. We'll go have dinner."

Norah smiled, nodding, "Sounds great. I'll see ye then."

She waved as she walked away, hurrying toward work and the very curious Jonathan.
