WHO: Michael and Gabriel
WHAT: BROS
WHEN: Sunday evening
WHERE: Cafe
WARNINGS: I doubt it

Michael was beginning to get used to life with Irina, the human who had taken up residence with him after he saved her from her captor, but that didn't mean he didn't still worry constantly every time he was at work. Some days were busy and his mind was kept from wandering to whether Irina was alright or not, but today had been entirely uneventful. And while normally he would be pretty thrilled with the city's lack of homicidal behaviour and a chance to actually dig into the mountain of paperwork he had on his desk, he couldn't concentrate at all.

Eventually his partner, consumed with annoyance at the normally eerily still Michael tapping his pens and twisting in his squeaky chair, insisted Michael 'just get out and have dinner already'. And while Michael normally ate his meals in the staff room, he decided to throw his beleaguered partner a bone and vacate the premises, as least for an hour or so.

Anyway, if he was in a cafe on his own, no one would question the dozens of texts he would likely send Irina, just to check on her.

He made his way to a nearby cafe, cellphone already in hand as he walked. The cafe he chose wasn't especially nice, but that also meant it wasn't especially crowded either. When it came to sugary coffee, Michael wasn't all that particular anyway (cake was, of course, a different matter entirely). So he sat in the corner, gigantic mocha in front of him, staring at his screen. He heard someone from a nearby table chuckle and mention something about 'Poking mons', but since Michael didn't know what that was, he ignored it entirely.

Gabriel had spent most of the day holed up in his tiny apartment, slowly but surely making his way on some new songs. His band, The Four Horseman, was playing a show the following weekend, and he always felt like he needed to have new material. Maybe he just got bored a little faster than everyone else. His band members had been annoying him as of late by constantly choosing the party over the music. Sure, Gabriel would never turn down a good party, but he still wanted his music to mean something, and the guys just weren't seeing that right now.

Giving in to the writer's block, Gabriel decided to take a break from the songs and go for a walk. He'd ran out of coffee much earlier that day and thought he'd stop somewhere for a quick cup to keep him on his toes. There was a decent, though a little shabby, cafe not too far from his place that he sometimes liked to go.

Approaching the cafe, Gabriel could immediately tell what was inside. He nonchalantly opened the door and stood there, looking across to the corner where his brother sat staring at a cell phone screen. Probably playing that stupid Pokemon game... Gabriel thought to himself. He stood for another few seconds before he waltzed across the cafe and took a seat in the corner with Michael.

"Of all the gin joints in all the world, and she walks into mine," Gabriel said while he motioned to a waitress for some coffee.

Michael was so shocked at that voice; a voice he would know anywhere, that he dropped his phone. Gabriel's voice always held such authority, and considering the role he held in the Christian mythos, that was hardly surprising. Before even looking at his brother, he snatched the phone up and hid it quickly, as if he had just been caught looking at porn or something.

"I can't drink gin, I get all dramatic," Michael said, finally making eye contact with Gabriel. Shaking off his embarrassment with the phone, he reached out for a hung.

Gabriel chuckled as his brother dropped his phone. It'd certainly been a while, but there was no forgetting the straight-forwardness that was Michael. It was always strange, meeting people from the past in this new world, but despite it all, Michael was family.

Gabriel accepted a hug from Michael, patting him on the back in a brotherly fashion. "Believe me, I know," Gabriel joked. The waitress brought him a mug and poured a steaming cup of hot black coffee, which he promptly began to drink. "So what brings the leader of God's armies into a shabby little cafe like this? I've missed you, brother."

Michael glanced at Gabriel's straightforward cup of black coffee, and subconsciously pulled his titanic, chocolate-filled mocha just a little bit closer to himself. He was the general of God's army and here he was essentially downing pure sugar.

Sometimes he felt like a joke.

"I was annoying my partner so she kicked me out. I'm a homicide detective and my partner is a Fury so...that's not all that surprising. I've missed you too, what brings you to the city?"

A homicide detective with a Fury for a partner? Gabriel couldn't help but feel like he'd been missing out on a lot. "What a small world, huh?"

He drank some more of his bitter coffee and smiled to himself. His brother became a cop and here he was... "I, uh, make music now, in a band. And I make coffee, too. Definitely not as noble as what you're doing." Sure, his music meant something to him. It meant a lot to him. He was a messenger and music allowed him to spread his message...whatever that was anymore. Sometimes, though, Gabriel felt like he wasn't doing enough for humanity.

"I don't think that's true," Michael was quick to say. So many of his pantheon looked to him for guidance and so reassurance came to him naturally. "I think music is very noble. So is coffee," he joked, taking a sip of his mocha. "How long have you been here? Have you run into anyone else yet?"

Gabriel smiled in gratitude. He often wondered how he had become so complacent with such a human lifestyle, but truly he enjoyed it. Especially the coffee part.

"Not long," Gabriel replied, thinking over all of his years traveling through out America and beyond. Since he didn't age, staying in one place too long was usually a bad idea. "Half a year, maybe. I relocated here with my band."

Over the years he had run into a handful of other wayfaring gods and the like, but surprisingly, this was his first encounter in New York. "You're the first familiar face I've seen here. I'm glad we ran into each other," Gabriel continued to drink his coffee, wondering at the life his brother had built for himself here and who all might be a part of it. "So tell me everything."

"I am glad too," Michael said warmly. It wasn't often that other people understood Michael, and he never felt quite as good as when he was surrounded by his brethren. Humans saw him as detached and strange. His brothers knew why that was.

"There's not much to tell," he said, avoiding the topic of Irina for now. "I mean, not much beyond what I do. Oh, I uh... A few years ago, Lucifer killed me..."

It'd had been many years since Gabriel had heard Lucifer's name spoken by someone who truly knew him. Gabriel spilled a drop of coffee when he heard, quickly wiping it up with a napkin. "What a guy, that one," he said, thinking of his rebellious brother. "Lucifer still hanging around these parts?"

Michael eyed the spot on the table where Gabriel had spilled his coffee, as if somehow there were answers scrawled there. "He is," Michael said softly. "But he shot me in Lebanon. Kansas. Did you know it's the centre of the country and if we go there- It's like being human," Michael said quietly. "It was horrible. He buried me. I was there for a month."

Gabriel had heard stories of Lebanon. He'd never gone to test the theory, however, and now was happy he hadn't. "That's terrible," Gabriel looked down, imagining how awful it must have been for his dear brother. Michael had always been the stronger one, the leader, and Gabriel suddenly felt guilty for not having been there for him in the recent decades. "I've heard about Lebanon. Never been," Gabriel sipped on his coffee. "I think I've spent enough time feeling human, though."

"I don't recommend it," Michael said flatly, before sipping at his drink. Michael very rarely felt human, and most of the things humans did just confused him. His most recent experience had scarred him in ways he didn't often talk about. "Lebanon, I mean."

He cleared his throat and decided to change the subject. "There are lots of saints here in the city. It helps to balance out the fact that Lucifer and Satan skulk around, trying to make trouble."

Gabriel sipped on his coffee and leaned back in his seat. "Apparently I need to get out more."
