It was hardly surprising that Emma had been feeling drained for months. As William's condition worsened, she was having to help him with more and more things. He was in a wheelchair now, and he had so much trouble swallowing that she had to feed him things she had blended into mush. Some days he could barely talk and she knew that he was starting to have trouble with his memory. Most of the time though, he still knew exactly who she was and entirely what was happening to him. Emma didn't know if that was better or worse. Sure in the end he would forget her, but at least he would be entirely unaware of his life deteriorating around him.

She made a job out of never complaining. She had hired help in the form of Thanatos, but when he wasn't there it was only her to bathe and feed and change him and help him around the house. She didn't mind, after all she had been doing it for strangers for decades, why not the man she loved beyond the ability to put it into words. Giving so much of herself, it was inevitable that she wouldn't always feel fantastic, physically. That was why the headaches and lack of appetite went unmentioned. The dizzyness and fatigue were of more concern, but surely they too were explainable.

They would have continued without complaint as well, if she Emma hadn't collapsed in the middle of feeding William his lunch. It had been a very hard day for William and while he recognised Emma, he was having trouble forming words and he had only managed to get half of the food she had fed him down. When she fell onto the floor, face first, William let out a wordless yelp of horror. William didn't have much control of his arms any more, but he tried his best to get over to the phone. It took forty-five minutes to get halfway there, and then a horrible myoclonic jerk saw him pitched out of his chair and onto the floor. Still, William tried to drag himself towards the phone and was still trying to when his youngest daughter, Lil, got home from school.

"Home," Lil called, tossing her bag onto the floor without a second thought. She went to head up the stairs into her room, but a wordless cry from the kitchen caused her belly to freeze in fear.

"M-Mom?" Lil asked, moving slowly towards the kitchen. "Mom, is that you?" Another cry. Shakily, Lil pulled her mobile out of her pocket and held it up as she edged into the kitchen. Of course the second she found both her parents sprawled on the floor, one unconscious, she gasped and ran over to her father. "Dad! Dad what happened!?" It quickly became obvious he wasn't going to be able to answer. Lil wasn't strong enough to lift him back into his chair either, so she dialled 911 as she crawled over to her mother's side. "Mom! MOM wake up!" she screamed, and when the phone was answered she was sobbing down it for someone to come help her.

An hour later she was sitting in the ER, tears streaming down her face. Her mother had been taken into the ER, and her father was being patched up from his fall. Quickly, Lil texted every single member of her family because she couldn't handle this on her own.
