WHO: Joey Van der Berg, Nikkie Reppyi
WHAT: Proposals
WHEN: New Years [Backdated, obvs]
WHERE: Their roooooof
WARNINGS: FLOOOOOF
Joey had never really bought in to the idea of resolutions, made at the beginning of each year, which were somehow going to shape up his life. Joey tried to live in the way where he regretted very little of what he did, and he didn't feel he ever really needed to make very many changes on some meaningless day that marked the ticking over of another year. There had been one year, however, he had made a very conscious decision to change. After spending three weeks being tortured by Lucifer himself, and even longer than that in a den of isolation and fear, Joey had come to the realisation that if he kept himself hidden away forever, he was letting Lucifer win.
He had started slowly, venturing out of his apartment to be with his friend, usually Lena who was his mobile safe space absolutely always. His bravery grew with time, and while he would never really be the same Joey he had been before everything had happened, maybe that was okay, because the Joey he had been would never have considered settling down with just one person. When feeling so personally unstable, he had reached out for stability and he had found that in Nikkie.
He was more grateful than he could ever say.
The day started simply enough. Olivia never really let them sleep in, but Joey couldn't find it in himself to mind. Xavier had cleaned the entire apartment and then spent the day baking and cooking an elaborate dinner for his housemates, before making himself mysteriously scarce, as if he knew exactly what Joey was planning to do at midnight. Joey figured he just might too. Xavier had a way of knowing what Joey was thinking before Joey ever said a word.
They had made the decision together to stay up even though they had Olivia to take care of. 2016 was only going to begin once, afterall. They were going to huddle up in coats and blankets on their rooftop, and watch the city's fireworks with a baby monitor in hand. And if they scared Olivia awake, at least they would be conscious to take care of it, but with the way Olivia slept through pretty much anything, Joey wasn't too worried his plans would be interrupted.
He was a little worried that Nikkie would laugh in his face, turn on her heel to walk away from him, taking Olivia with her while yelling out, 'see you later sucker' but he knew that was just nerves. Nikkie wasn't the type.
Wearing his red poofy jacket, he was pretty sure he looked ridiculous. It was ten to midnight and people were already setting fireworks off to ring in the new year. "It's hard to know if their clocks are fast or they just don't care," Joey laughed, his arms around Nikkie.
