Nikkie had made a promise to herself, fairly early in her pregnancy: she was not going to be one of those woman who started shrieking like banshees when they went into labor. So when a really sharp pain gripped her abdomen, she didn't jump, but it was a close thing.

She levered herself up from the couch and went looking for Joey. "Love?" she called. "We need to go to the hospital. Like. Now." Then a thought struck her. "You don't happen to know where my shoes are, do you?"

	Joey had been preparing a mug of peppermint tea for Nikkie when she stuck her head into the kitchen and said possibly the most terrifying words in the universe, right after 'Hi, I'm Lucifer'. 	"Nothing, dear, but I'm in labor, and I don't fancy having this baby on the kitchen floor," Nikkie told him, breathing as deeply and evenly as she could. "So I need my shoes, my phone, that bag I packed last week..." She broke off as she turned in circles, unsure of what to actually do first. 	"If you say so," Nikkie called after him, remembering she'd left her phone in the living room and going to retrieve it. She texted her sister, Lena, and Piper, before putting it and the charger into her pocket. "I've changed my mind, I'm cool with having her here," she declared as she sank onto the couch. "Yes, and believe me, I'm going to take them up on that," she agreed. "But I've still never done this before, and I'm probably going to freak out until she's safely in my arms. Hopefully that will pass once we're there."

The ride to the hospital seemed to be both interminably long, and yet take no time at all. The second they set foot inside, Nikkie was registered, bundled into a wheelchair, and carted off to be admitted. She was hooked up to machines, given a gown and an IV, and settled in to wait on the doctor.

Joey followed along, ever loyal and ever slightly terrified something might go wrong and he would lose the only woman he'd ever really loved and his daughter all in one day. He never used to be quite so anxious about things, but since being kidnapped by Lucifer, the worst option often felt much nearer than it used to.

He held Nikkie's hand and plastered a brave smile on his face that probably looked a little weird. "We're not saddling her with my surname, right?" Joey said, just to be distracting.

Nikkie ran her thumb over his knuckles. "We could hyphenate it, if you want," she suggested with a small smirk. "Reppyi-van-der-Berg. Talk about a mouthful. But if you don't want to, we don't have to, she can take my name."

"I love you," she went on. "It's going to be OK, the doctor will be here soon, and hopefully it won't be too long before we get to meet her."

She broke off as another contraction hit, and her sentence devolved into a strangled sort of yell. Fortunately for her, a medical team entered just then, checking her vitals and dilation. Nikkie gripped Joey's hand as they told her to push, gritting out, "Hey, at least if I break your hand, we're already in a hospital."

Nikkie managed a weak, brief smile, before bearing down once again when she was told to. The next few hours passed in a vague haze of pain, pushing, and squeezing Joey's hand until she was sure it'd shatter.

Finally, finally, she gave one last great push and collapsed back onto the bed, sweaty and exhausted. She heard faint noises in the background, and then a baby began to cry. She was given a blanket wrapped bundle, and pulling back the edge showed her daughter, wailing up at her. "None of that, now," she said softly, pulling her close and rocking her gently. "It's alright, darling. Hello. Welcome to the world."

	Joey leaned over to plant a kiss on his daughter's head. He hadn't stopped grinning since she had been born, and even though his hand was sore, he honestly couldn't care less.
