He thought he saw something break the surface, movements sluggish and weak. He squinted and called again, wading into the water up to his knees to try to get a bit closer. It had to be her.
"Just hold on! Temperance! I'm coming!" He pulled off his coat, jacket and shirt, leaving them dry on the bank as he struck out towards the ripples. The water was very cold on his bare skin but he wasn't going to give up just yet. He got to where he thought he'd seen her and trod water a moment, trying to see where she was. "Tempe- I'm here-" he gasped, diving under and reaching through the murky water to try to find her.
