"I honestly have no idea what would make me happy, Roxanna," Thomas said with a shrug. "I don't feel happy right now. I don't feel anything. I'm trying, I just...don't. I've gone numb and I'm just trying to be here and present despite that."
"But you aren't numb," Lena said, feeling stressed, "because you just laughed."
"You threatened to poke me in the liver," Thomas said, the corners of his mouth threatening to pull upwards.
"See, there! I don't think you're numb, Thomas. I think you're afraid to feel and you're trying to be numb."
Thomas gave her a dubious look, and then he licked his lips. "Okay. Okay maybe."
