Thomas stared at Jamie for what seemed like a rather long time, and then he shook his head. "The old me was high most of the time," he explained. "You can't have it both ways!"
"I think," Lena said, with one finger up in the air, "Jamie would know better than either of us, what your personality was like before the drugs, Thomas." She had met him before them too, but Jamie had had his entire life.
"Yes, but-" Thomas glanced at them as if he was confused why they weren't understanding, "I also had incredibly serious brain surgery between then and now." It was the reason his addiction to Vicodin had begun. "Personality changes can happen. It was easier to pretend I wasn't like this with the Vicodin. It's not an excuse, it's just...true."
Lena pressed her lips together, refusing to believe any of that was true.
