WHO: Demeter, Triton, Melanie, Raiden
WHEN: Thursday night
WHERE: Demeter's apartment
WHAT: Dinner with Aunt Demeter
With a call to Triton during the week, Demeter had apologized for failing to arrange their dinner. She'd been so focused on getting her restaurant open that the time for family had slipped away. But tonight was the night and Demeter had spent the afternoon in the kitchen cooking. She wanted these mortal girls to have another in the Pantheon who wasn't her wretched brother, and Demeter couldn't deny that getting to mother someone at this time of the year was exactly what she needed. Persephone's absence burned.
When the buzzer below went off, Demeter told them to come up and that the door would be unlocked for them. She was just turning down the oven when she heard the door open and came out of the kitchen to greet them. "Hello," she said to Triton and then smiled at the girls with him. "Welcome to my home."

Triton did as he could to keep Raiden out of trouble, but she kept searching out their father. Part of him hoped meeting Demeter would quiet some of the insistence she had that there was some good in Poseidon. If anyone knew his father's cruel hands, it would be her.
He'd held open the door for the girls and smiled to Demeter, offering her a bow. "Lady Demeter. Your hospitality is an honor to us." Rising he set a hand on Melanie's shoulder. "Permit me to introduce you to Melanie." Then he motioned to Raiden, "and my sister, Raiden."

Raiden was excited to meet more of these gods she'd grown up learning about. She was aware of how her father was, far more grouchy than she had been taught, but she had a determined spirit and hope. Unfortunately, it made her look incredibly naieve to the rest of her family. Her persistance was the one aspect she picked up from Poseidon. She greeted Demeter with a warm smile and a gift of aromatherapy candles, which she presented in a basket.
Melanie was less enthusiastic. This weather had really started to wear on her. She didn't feel as bubbly when she was around Raiden because she too had experienced Poseidon's vengeful side. If it hadn't been for her call out to Amphitrite she would have ended up worse off. She gave Demeter a pleasant smile, her face warming as Triton introduced her. She touched his hand lovingly.
"Thank you for the invite, Lady Demeter."

"You're all most welcome," Demeter said to them, taking the basket with a smile. "Please, come in and sit. Would you all like wine?" She'd bought the mortal kind, the mortals likely not used to the wine of Dionysus.
She led them through to the sitting room, the smell of roast lamb and vegetables wafting through from the kitchen. "It's lovely to have you all here," she said to them. "I thought it would do you young ladies to meet a less unpleasant Olympian."

He took Melanie's hand in his and smiled to her before following Demeter. He nodded to the offer of wine, "that would be lovely, thank you." When they came to the sitting room he released Melanie to take her coat, offering his hand to Raiden for hers.

Melanie could feel a comfort in this woman, this goddess, and it made her ease up a little despite Raiden's bouncy behavior. There was a kindness about her that Melanie had hardly known of a mother. She'd grown up without one, she hardly knew what it was like. She had hoped, perhaps a bit naively that Amphitrite would accept her into their family and give her that comfort. It was unsettling when her father-in-law (if Triton ever proposed to her) was Poseidon.
Once the coats were taken off and placed she grabbed Triton's hand again, it was a subtle comfort to have him close, especially when they had still not spent as much time together as when she first arrived.
Raiden followed into the kitchen with eyes as big as they could go, gleaming with the bright blues of her father.
"You mean my father," Raiden announced. She had yet to be crushed by him, she was bent on not being, she wanted a spot in his life as much as any of his children.
Melanie moved from Triton's hold and offered to help Demeter with anything. "I'd like some wine, please." Raiden was unfortunately still too young, but what was it going to hurt?

"I do, unfortunately, refer to your father," Demeter said to Raiden, handing a glass of wine to Melanie as she spoke "How much of his mythology have you read, Raiden?" She didn't really want to discuss all this, but Triton had said the girl was naive and that would get her killed in this world.
"Triton, dear boy, if you would," Demeter said, reaching out a bowl of fresh fruit to the god and gesturing for him to place it on the bench across from them.

He took the bowl and placed it where Demeter had indicated, giving Raiden a glance. He knew that Raiden had heard her tales from her mother, and was unsure how to feel about it. The girl had been lied to, and now held fast to the belief that there was truth to the lies.

"I know what my mother has told me," she said with courage. "He is a little different than I expected." Though she refused to be beaten down by any of his harsh words.
"A little?" Melanie chimed in with a irked tone, "he's a bastard." She couldn't help herself, even in Demeter's presence she couldn't hold back her uncomfortableness on Tue matter. It was depressing that the girl was so naieve, and she almost didn't hold her tongue at how stupid she sounded.

Demeter gave a gentle smile to Melanie, an expression to show that she agreed. Since Raiden hadn't wanted wine, Demeter poured her a wine glass of a sweet pink juice, a mixture that reminded her somewhat of the sugary ambrosia of old.
"Come through and sit," Demeter said to them, leading them into the open sitting room until dinner was ready. "Raiden, I think it would be best if you were to read the tales that made your father and take what your mother said along with that. Perhaps," the goddess suggested as she ran her fingers along a bookshelf, "begin with the story of the maiden Medusa." She passed a mythology text to the young girl, one that she knew spoke of that story. (She also knew that this same book spoke of his attack on her as well.) "Take that home, look through it at your leisure. We Gods do not change. Every word spoken of us in there - both favorable or unbeautiful - remains true forever."
She sat then, taking a sip of her wine, and looked to Melanie with a smile. "Melanie," she said warmly, reaching across to touch her hand. "Won't you tell me about yourself? She's such a beauty, Triton," she added, smiling at the boy.

He smiled to Melanie, not even correcting her. She knew the truth of it. He sat when Demeter indicated and glanced to Raiden. "Lady Demeter is right Raiden. Your mother taught you our father is caring and kind. Something to ease the pain of him not being there. The book tells it more honestly. And then there's the accounts I witnessed first hand. The anger he showed me when I aided Odysseus when his command was to make the sailor suffer. He's going to turn his cruelty onto you Raiden. He will try and break you, if only because you tell him he can't."
He grinned at the praise to Melanie, "I know. I'm fortunate." Smiling he kissed Melanie. "Mostly because she's giving me another shot, and now she knows about who I really am." He set his arm around Mel's shoulders.

Melanie wanted to say more, she was losing her patience with the girl, but she tried for Triton. The man had the most patience she'd ever seen. It was kind of dazzling really. It was strange that out of everything Triton had ever told her, exposing himself for his true self was not what scared her the most. She didn't want to disappoint him after what he'd done to keep her together these last few months. She as mortal, she had weaker points and she broke down more easily. Her sunshine was coming back, but Raiden reminded her of too much too soon. It was nice to have another woman around that understood that, the kind of power Poseidon tried to take over those weaker than himself.
Raiden took the book from Demeter, flipping a few pages. It was much older than some of the library books she'd tried to check out before, which just as her mother's stories, proved childlike in comparison. She took a seat, book in lap reading over a few lines. Her eyes scanned back and forth.
"I've never heard the Medusa story like that," she said in a quieter voice. Triton's words did not go unrecognized, but she did not speak for a moment as she sipped at the drink Lady Demeter handed her.
Melanie bowed, "Thank you, Lady Demeter." She squeezed Triton's hand tightly. "He's the amazing one." She leaned into his embrace, resting her head against his shoulder.
