He'd spent the last few weeks fixing up what was left of his boat in the shape Greed had left it. It took a lot more money than he wanted in revamping it a second time. It was his home. Often nights he spent there just letting the water settle against it, rocking him back and forth. It was the only comforting part of his life when it was going up in flames. Here he was trying to be a father to a girl he still didn't know much about. He'd grown more than attached, he felt like an old man.
As he lay there on the cot he felt someone near the harbor that wasn't just passing by. He'd had her on his mind for days, but today it was heavy. A rock in his stomach. He left her once stranded all alone. He told himself it was because he couldn't have a woman on board to take care of. He wasn't ready for a wife or to settle down. He'd given himself a million reasons and they were all watered down excuses.
He came outside onto the deck of the boat. The name had been repainted. The Aegeus. He saw her standing there wondering if it were just a dream, his imagination gone wild. She was one of two people who didn't find him offensive. It was something, no matter how small. "Ari?" he asked, hands on the railing as the wind whipped past, carrying her golden hair with it.
