With Piper's arms around him, his fury abated. Frustrated by his own weakness, he struck out at the few remaining flowers limply before burying his face in his hands. His crying escalated into great, heaving sobs and for a moment he left like he might never catch his breath again.
Then he opened his eyes and Piper was there with him and he found his breath. He leaned against her shoulder, his sobs quieting. "I'm sorry," he whispered to her, falling back into a sitting position.
