WHO: Svetlana Artemyeva, Azrael
WHAT: Nightmare comforts
WHEN: Wednesday night
WHERE: Their house

The walls were closing in on her and it was getting hard to breathe. She was locked in a tiny room with a small mattress in the corner and a thin blanket all she had for comfort. It was so dark and cold and all she wanted was to see her sister, but they wouldn't let her. She had been told she would never see her again and it wasn't her concern.

The lights were going out one by one and when the final light left her, she was surrounded in darkness.

Svetlana awoke with a scream and she clutched at her chest, her eyes darting around the room for a second. Finally she realised she was safe and in New York, but the dream still had her rattled. She never wanted to go back to her old life. Not ever.

Azrael had always been a bit of a light sleeper, barring the occasions when he'd been on call for days, then came home and slept like the dead. So when he heard Svetlana scream, he jerked awake and walked quickly down the hall to her room.

He rapped on the door with his knuckles. "Svetlana?" he called softly. "Are you alright?"

Svetlana's head snapped roughly towards her bedroom door, frightened for a second before she realised it was Azrael. With a sigh of relief, she said, "oh yes, I'm okay. Will you come in?"

Azrael eased the door open and stepped inside. "I heard you scream," he said, not getting too close. "Were you having a nightmare?"

"Yeah," she said softly, turning to face him. She switched her lamp on and blinked when the light hit her eyes for a second. "It was terrible."

"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked quietly. "Or would you rather I go, and let you go back to sleep."

"Don't go?" she whispered, feeling a little shy. She scooted over so he could sit on her bed if he wanted.

"It was like I was back in Russia."

"As you wish," he replied, taking a seat on the corner of the bed and crossing his legs under himself.

"I can't imagine that was very pleasant for you," he said softly.

"No," she shook her head slowly. "I dreamed they took my sister away again. I used to have to stay in this dark little room and it was always so cold. They would lock me in so I couldn't run away. Sometimes I wouldn't see anyone else for days."

"We could still try and find her, if you wanted," he offered. "It's a big place, but that doesn't mean we have to give up."

"And you know you're welcome anywhere in the house," he continued. "Granted, leaving by yourself isn't the best idea, but that doesn't mean you can't ever."

"I would like to try and find her," she nodded. "But it might be difficult."

She smiled when he tried to assure her she could move about the house. "I know your enemies might use me to hurt you, and I don't want to die. I'll only go out when it's safe." Perhaps it wasn't entirely fair to her to be in that situation, but it was a hell of a lot better than the one she had been in just a few months ago.

"I don't feel trapped here, I just- I guess sometimes I worry they might find out you're an angel and try to take me back there."

"I can make some phone calls," he suggested. "See what turns up."

"And I will endeavor to keep you from dying, in any case," he replied. "My brothers...well. You know."

"And they're welcome to try," he said evenly, raising one eyebrow. "It's good to have connections in mortal law. Comes in handy to discourage people from doing stupid things."

"I would like that," she said with a little hopeful smile.

Quietly she asked, "would- Would you be sad if I was taken?" She just wanted to mean something to someone.

"I think I would," he said, after mulling over her words. He tried to find words of his own to explain it. "I've lived alone for much of my existence, and I usually prefer it that way. And when you showed up on my doorstep, I had...no idea how I was going to make this work. And now, it's almost hard to imagine coming home, and you not being here."

It made her blush a little, and she smiled at him. "I never had anyone either. I think it works! No one ever cared before if I lived or died, just how much money I made them."

I'm just like, *keysmash* *flaily hands* 'Heeeee, you're so cuuuute!' :D

"How much money a person can make is a horrible way to measure their worth," Azrael grumbled. "But it's...nice. Not living on my own."

They're both adorable!

"I always thought so," she nodded. "But that was just how things worked for me. I was so unhappy and no one cared. It's best I ended up here. I don't know how well I would have done if I had to really be a wife."
