WHO: Natalie, Conrad, and Natalie's parents.
WHEN: 18th of August, evening
WHERE: Natalie's apartment
WHAT: Meeting the parents, oooooooh

In the kitchenette, the chicken in the oven was roasting and Natalie's wine glass on the bench was only half empty. She was smiling at Conrad through in the living room and said, "you look great."

Soon her parents were going to be here. She hadn't seen her folks for years because, even as a pilot, London was far and time off was sparse. This would be the first time they'd seen her in America as well, the country that she'd come to make her own over the last decade. They'd refused to let her greet her at the airport, instead wanting to retire back to their hotel after the flight and then meet her for dinner. Natalie had made sure to make the apartment spotless.

With his hair swooped over and the button up shirt, Conrad looked like Steve Rogers trying to fit into the 21st Century. There were still aspects about Conrad that were pre-World War II. The nice black leather jacket updated his look a bit, giving him that renegade edge Natalie fancied. He smoothed the creased in his shirt, somewhat nervous. For some reason he didn't think they would take to him. He looked the same age, but inwardly Conrad was an old man.

"You think they're going to like me?" He looked at the wine glass he picked up. He needed a scotch, but heavier liquor on his breath when they showed up wouldn't be a good idea.

"Would you stop stressing," Natalie said, walking over to him and wrapping her arms around his waist to smile up at him. "They're going to love you. How could they not love you?"

"Because at times I'm a little old." He relaxed a little in her embrace. He could fly in the worst of weather, come back from a crash and survive what felt like the end of the world for him; but meeting her parents made him a little uneasy. This was his Natalie, not like any woman he'd been with before. He'd even been engaged, but this felt so different.

"Well, they're old too, so you should get on fine," Natalie teased. "You'll all be talking about the good old days before you know it. But maybe we'll try not to mention you being old enough to fight in the first world war."

He smiled. "That might bring up some interesting questions. I'd end up at a mental institution." He snugged his arm around her waist. "You know I'm surprised you didn't physically put me in one when I exposed myself as your not-so-secret-90 year-old crush."

"If I went round sectioning everyone who said crazy things," Natalie said, "I'd never have time for anything else in life." She grinned at him and then, letting on of her hands slip, smacked him on the ass before pulling away. "Now let me finish getting dinner ready. They're going to be here soon. Dad's always early."

This was a step. A big step in their relationship that they had never ventured into before. They were both being grown-ups about this. He jumped lightly at her little smack, finally letting her loose to retreat back into the kitchen. "Don't open the oven yet. Give it at least ten more minutes." He'd helped her cook and clean or she would have been running around like a chicken with her head cut off.

He held onto his wine glass, walking around in a circle from one corner to the other of the living room until they showed. "You better save Moritz a chicken leg or he'll never forgive you."

Natalie opened the oven just a little to peek inside, despite what Conrad and said, and called out, "what Moritz doesn't know won't hurt him."

Just as she said it, the buzzer went and Natalie straightened up and darted for the door, running past Conrad with a delighted cry of, "they're here!"

She leaned on the buzzer and a female voice with a strong London accent came through the speaker. "I hope this is Natalie?"

"Hi mum," Natalie smiled, pressing the button to open the door downstairs. "You can come in. There's an elevator at the end of the hall, and I'm on floor five."

She turned off the intercom and turned to smile at Conrad. "How are those nerves of yours?"

"Oh dear..." he sat down his wine glass on the kitchen counter, straightening his jacket and shirt again for the millionth time. Natalie hadn't lost her British accent, but what he heard on the buzzer was a little thicker than he'd ever heard from her.

For a man that was usually calm and knew what to do with himself, he felt his palms sweat. He walked past Natalie to get a quick kiss before finding somewhere to place himself until they came upstairs.

"Relax, would you? You're making me nervous!" She was smiling though, and she took another sip from her wine glass as she poured two more for her parents to be ready when they arrived.

Then there was a knock on the door and Natalie went to open it. There was a flurry of happy greetings and hugs and comments on how well everyone looked. Eventually, still smiling, Natalie stood beside her parents and turned to Conrad and said, "Con, these are my parents. Elaine-" she gestured to the slightly plump white woman beside her "-and Stephen." With that the tall Asian man with the greying hair beside her smiled and stepped towards Conrad to shake his hand. Natalie, smiling at Con, said, "And this is Conrad, my boyfriend."

"A pleasure, Conrad," Stephen said. His own accent was the strong Estuary one that Natalie had had when she'd first moved to the States, one she didn't realise she'd been somewhat losing over the years. "Natalie hasn't told us much about you, but she's never told us anything at all about any men she's dated previously."

"Daaad," Natalie said, sounding like an embarrassed teenager all of a sudden.

Conrad greeted them with the proper shakes and formalities. It stilled his nervousness for a bit when Stephen broke the ice with a little joke. "It's true Natalie, normally your taste in men is quite atrocious." He teased settling an arm around her middle. "I've known you for eight years now?" He looked to her father with a little ease in his eyes. "Friends for the longest time until my good charms finally won her over."

At the comment about her taste in men, Stephan looked at her with a raise eyebrow of question and interest and she just shrugged at him a little, her expression easy going. Inside, however, she prayed to every single god there was that Con wouldn't say anything more about previous boyfriends. A discussion about her taste in men running to the violent and bastardly was not what Natalie thought her parents needed to know. She had been very careful to keep any of that from getting back to them. They'd had enough reasons to worry about her when she'd moved so far away from them.

At Con's comment on his charms, Natalie made a sound of derision and and elbowed him gently. "Dream on, soldier. Just for that," Natalie teased him, "you get to stay here and make small talk, while I check dinner." She give Conrad a beaming smile as she left him.

Elaine smiled at the young man in front of her and said, "Conrad, you're a pilot like Natalie?"

At Natalie's disappearance, Con found himself in a room with people he'd never met that he needed to appease in the best of ways. He needed to keep this impression a good one. Some of his soldier training could come in handy about now as he left his anxieties at bay to tackle what was right here in front of him. Like a man.

"Yes, sir I am." He also couldn't let that little bit of losing his license a few years ago and just recently attaining it again affect how this conversation went. "There is no place better than in the sky." His German did start to make a trickling effect the more he talked about his love of flying and the fact that there was nothing else like it. Man was born to fly.

"Obsessed as her, it sounds like," Elaine said with a smile towards her husband.

Natalie returned then with all four of their wine glasses on a tray. She put it down on the coffee table and led her parents to sit on the couch, passing them the full glasses and passing Con's his own with a smile. "We met working together. The company I'm still with, actually. Con's originally from Germany," she added, looking to her parents.

"Lovely," Elaine said. "Oh, look at you, dating a German pilot. Who ever would have guessed?"

Stephan laughed softly. "You've probably noticed our girl and her feelings about German fighter pilots. Her last years at home her bedroom was a shrine to famous pilots. I notice those posters haven't made their way up all over these walls?" he said to Natalie, taking a look aroumd.

"I'm pretending to be an adult now I'm here," Natalie grinned.

"Oh yes, who can forget Natalie's obsession with German fighter pilots." Con gave her a wink. She had her very own hero right there. He seemed a little embarrassed when her father continued about Natalie's poster fetish. "Oh, I never saw the photos. Did you have a Red Baron poster on your wall?" He took one of the wine glasses drinking it down. His nerves were still a bit jittery, but her parents seemed genuinely lovely people.

"I might have had a framed photo," Natalie smirked at him, taking a sip of her wine.

"It's a beautiful place you both have here," Elaine said, giving the living room a glance around.

"Oh," Natalie said, correcting her quickly, "we don't- we're not-" She took a breath and smiled, realising she was going to work herself up. She squeezed Con's hand. "We don't live together. Not yet," she added, giving Con a little smile.

Conrad paused setting his drink aside finding he was a little dumbfounded by Natalie's remark. It was no surprise that he wanted to finally ask her to move in, he'd been thinking it for months, but with Natalie there came some guidelines. He didn't want to move too fast just yet and scare her away, it had taken them a long time to get to this point. She had almost lost him for good to her own foolishness, and then his own had also nearly put them both on the chopping block. It was an uphill battle and he didn't want to jump the gun too soon. But, to hear her even suggest it as a future possibility in those two small words, maybe it was the time.

"Do you need some more wine?" Conrad asked Eline, giving him an excuse to get up to fill his own glass with something a little heavier. The nerves were starting to set in. Bolting through the sky was easy, even his bad car habits, but being in such a normal setting with Natalie, it was a tad surreal.

She noticed the expression that passed across Conrad's face for a moment and knew that it was something they could talk about later, once her parents were gone.

"That would be lovely," Elaine said, holding out her glass. "I'm so glad you're happy here, Natalie. You're so far from home and I always worry."

"I am," Natalie said. "Living here has been a dream come true." It was better not to mention all the things that had gone wrong, because that was life in the end and her parents could do nothing about it now.

Getting up he downed a fresh glass of his own out of view from her parents before refilling the glass and her mother's as well, tucking the wine bottle under his arm as he returned to the couch to take a seat.

"She's safe here, I promise I take good care of her." He had been since he met her. Natalie was a special girl and he knew that from the very beginning.

So this scene of him meeting her parents was basically the last one. (there was another more recent one with ghosts but it only has three comments and i don't quite remember the whole deal with the ghosts thing, i think everyone was seeing them??)

I just reread the one after he'd crashed the plane and she thought he was dead, then she came over and made him shower and stuff and then was all- hang on, lemme find the bit!

Natalie wanted to growl and yell at him, but she knew if she'd taken down a plane of passengers she'd have been impossible to shift from bed. (Hell, she'd probably have thrown herself off a building and never let anyone convince her it wasn't her fault.) But, dammit, she knew in that case that Con wouldn't have give up trying to get through to her. So Natalie wouldn't stop either.

So instead Natalie unbuckled her own belt with determination and then yanked down the top of her jeans just enough to remind him of the tattoo there. "Manfred," she said, repeating that freaking amazing name because it was his, because those words etched into her flesh were his. "Read it. You read it and don't you dare tell me that it's not true anymore."

Natalie leaned forward and pressed her forehead against his. "'To the last beat of the heart'," Natalie whispered, eyes closed. "Mine beats for you."

Natalie was doing exactly what he would have for her in a time of need, he would have been persistent and reminding her of how to keep going. His eyes had yet to meet hers when she peeled down the jeans on her hip far enough for him to read those words.

His fingers drifted against the skin, soft and feathery, taking in each word. It made his eyes sting. He felt his heart pump again, actually skipping a beat at her last words. It was perhaps the most affectionate thing Natalie had ever spoken to him. His breath caught in his throat, forehead against hers, eyes closing.

I DIE.

Which is to say, yes, I am totally going to play Natalie again. Having read all her scenes again, I can feel her voice returning.

Yeah, I think when we'd left them they were just about talking about moving in together, so maybe that should be what we do with them next? She can move into his place :) I don't wanna jump them ahead from where they were too much!
