WHO: Sif & Loki
WHEN: Monday evening
WHERE: Some Brooklyn bar
WHAT: Meeting an old 'friend' in America
WARNINGS: Bitching?

New York was complicated to navigate for Sif, which meant that three weeks after moving to the city she was still constantly taking the wrong turns to go places. It was because she'd given up in car. In Los Angeles that car had felt essential even if she ended up spending hours in traffic, but New York with its famed subway system and pedestrian-friendly nature, had made her leave it behind.

Although at least getting lost on foot meant she couldn't go too far in the wrong direction. She might have ended up in Boston with a car.

Sif wasn't overly fond of the other people who crowded her on the street. She wanted to be calm and unflappable but over the last few years... well, it had become a lot easier for things to flap her. She didn't like the change in herself, but there it was. In Asgard she'd been considered to be so level-headed and difficult to anger; she was almost pleased she'd never run into any of her kin in the thirty or so years she'd been in America.

But maybe thinking about her fellow Aesir was what stirred them up, because as she sat down in a bar near to her work with a glass of white wine, she felt the unmistakable feeling of someone familiar, but that she couldn't yet place. With a frown she turned to scan the bar around her.

All this buzz and attention was finally starting to get to Loki. He liked to pretend that it didn't affect him, that Thor was the only one that changed when this culture wave came around, but eventually it started to creep in.

Maybe he was an inch or two taller, and maybe he was more confident (if that was at all possible), but it certainly wasn't anything to complain about. If anything, he was feeling on top of his game.

His evening got even better when he felt that familiar tingle of someone nearby. He saw the hair before anything else (of course, of course he'd see the hair) and his face split into a slow smile. This would be fun.

He slipped in between two bar stools, situating himself close to the goddess but not addressing her directly, and flagged down the bartender.

Sif's expression read surprise followed very quickly by annoyance. "Loki," she said, sounding deeply unimpressed. Of all the other gods she could have met here, Loki was at the very bottom of the lists of ones she'd want to.

It had been a long time since Asgard, but she imagined he was still the same troublesome being he'd once been there.

He turned at the sound of his name, feigning surprise. He completely ignored the tone of her voice. "Well, of all the gin joints in all the world..." He pulled the rocks glass toward him, leaning on the bar. The smile reappeared on his face.

"Hello, Sif. You're looking well."

Be civil, Sif told herself as she looked at him. Be civil, be collected, be adult. Don't smash his face into his glass. In Asgard a thought like that never would have crossed her mind, but in modern America it was taking an extreme about of willpower not to do just that. Sher flexed her hand into a tight fist where it rested on the bar and then let it loosen.

Hadn't she always been good at letting his words (mostly) wash right over her? That was the part of herself she needed to keep hold of here tonight. And so she smiled tightly and said, "very kind of you. Tell me though, is New York a small place, or are you stalking me?"

He didn't miss the fist she made, and he made sure to file the gesture away in the back of his mind. That was new. He didn't expect her to fawn over him - she never had - but he didn't expect her to be so tense.

What had happened the last time he'd seen her? It must have been that time he'd let everyone have it. He couldn't remember seeing her again before he'd been tied down.

Funny how even partially remembering the event would throw him into a bad mood.

"As much as I'm sure you'd like to hear me admit the latter, this place really is that small. Looks like you just got lucky today." He took a sip of his scotch, tucking his hair behind his ear. It was getting longer.

Sif took a sip from her glass as she watched him and then placed it back down on the counter before saying, "I always was a very lucky woman."

She thought to turn her back on him then, but it occurred to her that if Loki was here then maybe others were as well. "Am I the only god you have to harass tonight? Isn't Odin or Thpr here for you bother?"

Loki leaned over the bar, sighing. "Honestly, I'm so bored with Thor. It's always the same thing with him. But I don't have to tell you that, do I?"

He placed his chin in his hand, feeling fairly pleased with himself. If she was asking him that, then she had no idea who was around. "What have you been up to lately, Sif? Tell me something interesting - I've been dying for a good story."

"Are you telling me you two still can't handle being the same room?" Sif asked, still trying to dig for information out of him. "I would have thought you'd be practically snuggling these days. I've seen the movies, brother-in-law." She'd discovered that googling Loki and Thor together had lead to rather a lot of art of the two of them engaged in filthy acts. One had to wonder if that had rubbed off, so to speak.

"Hmm," Sif said, lifting her wine glass to look at him. "I have a story about a woman who was trying to get a little drunk after work, but was interrupted by a troublesome old friend?"

He honestly couldn't stand those movies. He didn't like talking about them, or about Thor, or his own warped role in the tale. They were screwing with his perception of reality, and her barb didn't go unnoticed. "He'd rather jump from a cliff, I'm sure. He lets it affect him too much. I really couldn't care less."

Loki rolled his eyes. "There are too many stories involving me at this point. I'd rather hear one I'm not a part of." He grinned. "Or have you been getting into trouble while your husband's been away?"

"I'm glad to hear you're so happily carefree these days," was what Sif said to him, but the tone would have much better suited, shouldn't you be writhing under a poisonous snake somewhere?

"What I do while my husband is away always was one of your favourite jabs at him," Sif said with a roll of her eyes, tightening her hand around the glass a little. She wished she could be sure of the things that had passed between her and Loki, or her and other men, or her and... anything really. Her whole life was such a mess of misinformation. "I've got no stories for you."

He raised his hand with a flourish, saying nothing for a moment. He could hear the venom behind her words - he could only assume what sort of horrible nightmare she was imagining for him.

"Yes, you always were an unreasonably sensitive subject for him. Are you worried I'm going to run and tattle?"

That's okay! I'm taking forever on everything as well!

"Yes," Sif said, taking a sip of her wine, "that's exactly what I think you're going to do." She looked at Loki seriously. "Nothing said between the two of us has ever remained in our confidence, so why would I give you that ammunition?"
