Who: George and Elizabeth Tudor
When: Monday afternoon
Where: Elizabeth's apartment
What: Hi hi hi hi hi <3
George wouldn't have said he was bouncing, exactly. More like jittering very quickly whenever he had to stop moving to wait for traffic. All right, maybe it was bouncing. But it had been a long time since he'd gotten to hang out with Elizabeth, and he hadn't even gotten the chance to give her a bear hug at the ball, since fancy dresses didn't mix well with bear hugs. Plus, there had been so many people there that they hadn't had much of a chance to catch up.
When he reached her apartment building, he dialed her phone number and waved up at the building. "Hey, Bess, what has blonde hair and is outside your building?"

Elizabeth smiled brightly into the phone and went to look out her window, standing on the balcony and looking down at him. "Is it Saint George?" she asked him directly, although from this height only the phone would carry their voices. "Because if not, he appears to be here too." She grinned. "I'll buzz you in. Apartment 7B."
She hung up the phone on him and put it down before going to the door to press the buzzer. Then she unlocked her front door and left it ajar, going to set out a tray for tea.

George bounded up the steps, taking them three at a time. When he reached Elizabeth's door, he nudged it open and then closed it behind him with his foot. He very politely waited until after she'd set the tea tray down before sweeping her into a giant hug, twirling her for good measure.
"This is a lot easier to do when I'm not in a suit," George said with a laugh as he put her down. "I always worry I'm going to really mess those up."

Elizabeth laughed brightly, lifting her feet to be swirled properly. Then when they stood she set both her hands on his cheeks. "Alone with my George at last," she said to him adoringly. "And you look good no matter what you wear, so suits can be damned."

George leaned forward and kissed her on the forehead, giving her another quick hug before he let her go. He looked around at her apartment and whistled.
"Swanky. You should've seen the place I was living when I first moved to the city. Like a shoebox with no hot water."

"I couldn't live without hot water," Elizabeth said with a shake of her head as she walked over to stand by him again. She relished this closeness after so long. It was the nearest she could be to her dear England long past. "Such an alien idea to me in life, but now it's something I need. So many things like that happen with time."

"The modern age has made us all wusses," George laughed. "Used to be I'd have no problem jumping into the Hudson to wash off, and now all I can think of is that it's cold and polluted."
He flopped down onto her couch and pulled her down next to him. "Me and Sebastian's house has endless hot water and an actual backyard, though, so maybe I shouldn't whine."

At the mention of the husband Elizabeth visibly cooled, loosening herself quickly from his grip and pouring them both a cup of tea in icy silence. Not only would he marry, but he'd come into her home and flaunt that fact right in her face?

George raised an eyebrow. If it had been someone else, he'd have told himself he was imagining the sudden change in mood. But he'd known Elizabeth long enough to know when something had gotten her angry.
"What's with the cold front?" George asked, nudging her shoulder gently.

"You married," Elizabeth told him and her tone was deadly. She didn't look at him, instead dropping the sugar cubes into the tea - five in each little cup, the over-sugared tea of the Elizabethan age, when everyone had been obsessed with the stuff.

In a weird kind of way, he'd been expecting something like this. Maybe not about the marriage, but Elizabeth had always been possessive. George had never minded, though, because it came in a very different flavor from her father's version of possessive. And this was Bess. He couldn't get mad at her.
"Bess, the relationship I've got with Sebastian...it's totally different from the one I've got with you," George said. "It's apples and oranges, or apples and sabertoothed tigers."

Elizabeth stood, glowering down at him where he sat. "You married!" she spat, hands on her hips. She wished her her expansive gowns, her jewels, her wigs, all of those things that had made her an impressive sight in her rages. She could only show anger like some normal woman now, and Elizabeth hated to be seen as merely normal. "I ought to strike you for disgracing me like this, for betraying me! How dare you marry without my consent!"

"I had no idea you were even here," George said, standing up too. "And even if I had known, I'm a grown man, Bess. I love Sebastian, and I married him." Tone a little gentler, he said, "He isn't replacing you, Bess. You and I weren't married way back when, and I loved you all the same."

"You did not have my leave to do this, and I would have never permitted it!" Oh, she wanted to strike him, so badly, but she wanted too to retain some sort of decorum. "You are Saint George and England and you are mine alone!"
He must have known this would happen, he must have remembered her rage when her darling Dudley had married and how cruelly she had treated his new wife. He must have remembered how she took any concept of people abandoning her as a near act of war against her. With her childhood history of abandonments, neglect and imprisonment it could hardly be considered surprising.

"You always shared me with the world," George said, reaching up to lay his hands on her shoulders. "Even back then. But I stayed with you because you were my queen and because I wanted to. I still want to. I'm never going to leave you or abandon you, especially not now."

Her George, as caring and kind as he was ferocious, and for a moment Elizabeth utterly despised him for it. "How," she demanded after a painful moment, "can you expect me to accept this? No," she said with a sure shake of her head, pulling herself free of his hand and pacing. "No, you'll end this affair of yours. You know I wouldn't hold it against you to take lovers - as long as I don't have to see them - but this marriage will be finished."

George closed his eyes and ducked his head. He let out a long sigh before he looked back up at her.
"No. I love you, Bess, but I'm not going to divorce the person I love because you're feeling possessive."

Elizabeth took a step backwards from him, almost a stumble. How could he say no to her? What was he compared to her? He'd been only some soldier before he'd proved himself to God but Elizabeth had been chosen by God, from birth, as His representative on earth, to rule England in His stead. And now George denied her?
"Why would you strike out at me like this?" she demanded from him. "How can you deny me what is rightfully mine. We are one, George. I swore that upon the Holy Bible. I swore to take no man as husband but my country."

"And I didn't make any kind of oath!" George said, frustrated. "I serve England's monarchy, but that doesn't make me your slave, Bess. I've defied plenty of monarchs before, and I'll defy you if I have to."
He sat down on the couch and took a long swig of tea, trying to calm himself down. Yelling wasn't going to help anyone. "But I'm not defying you. This didn't have anything to do with you. Sebastian needed me, and I needed him. It..." He tried to think of an example, something that would make her see that this wasn't some shot at her. "Do you remember when I told you about my brothers, and said that no matter what was happening in Ireland or Scotland or Wales, I wasn't going to cut off contact with them or fight with them?"

"And what about what I need?" Elizabeth asked, her tone surprisingly hurt after all the anger before she forced it down again, swallowing hard.
At his example, Elizabeth turned her back on him, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. "That is not at all the same," she told him at a hiss. She still knew her place with him then. She'd still been Good Queen Bess and he has still been her England.

"It is the same," George said. "I'm no more completely England's saint then you are completely a queen and nothing more. We're still people. I've loved Sebastian since I was human, and we've spent centuries bouncing off of each other and fighting the world and ourselves. I need him, Bess, the same way I need my brothers."
He got up from the couch and walked over to her, resting a hand on her back. "The same way I need you. You can hate me for this, and you can cut me out of your life, but I just got you back and that'll make the world a much darker place for me. This doesn't have to change things between us. I'm still yours, as much as I've ever been."

She should have turned and slapped him, but she didn't want to do that. The truth was that she missed, so much, having these men in her life and George more than any of them.
She couldn't accept this, but more terrifying was the thought of losing George. She turned slowly and met his eye as she worked to control her hurt expression. Then she embraced him wordlessly, burying her face against his shoulder and breathing him in.

George pulled her into the hug, resting his chin on the top her her head carefully.
"I love you," he murmured. "Things are going to be the same as they've ever been, you'll see. I promise."

"I love you," she relented, feeling the weakness in admitting that right now. He had the upper hand in this and Elizabeth wouldn't be able to regain it. She had just shown George that she needed him more than he needed her. Elizabeth hated to admit that she needed anybody,
"I will not promise to be kind to him," Elizabeth said, breathing into his shirt. "I am not a forgiving woman."

"I'm not asking you to be best friends," George said. He'd have liked it, but beggars couldn't be choosers. And he'd rather have Elizabeth being snide to Sebastian than not having Elizabeth at all. "I just don't want you kicking me to the curb and never speaking to me again."

"I couldn't," Elizabeth sighed and she did sound a little annoyed for it. She drew back and looked at him seriously. "You're very much a part of me." Then she pointed at him accusingly. "But I'm not pleased about this, George, and you'd do well not to forget it. I've been always loyal to you."

"Bess, if you'd married every single man who ever asked, it wouldn't have changed who you are to me," George said. "You're a part of me too. That couldn't ever change, anymore than I could just toss off my halo and stop being a saint."
