"We got closer as we got older, it's nice to have so many siblings around," Maddy said. "Which, of course, means this one has a whole passel of aunts."
Jamie fake-scoffed. "Like I'd ever mind that," he told her. "I was convinced you were my older sister til I was about 9 anyway. I think it broke Dad's heart to disabuse me of the notion."
"Aww, probably," Maddy agreed.
She hummed. "You know, I don't know why not," she said after a moment. "I don't think my doctor would object, and maybe I could fool myself into thinking it's the real thing. It's amazing what you can trick yourself into feeling, so I've been told."
