The sudden understanding that it hadn't been Thomas who had hit her ignited a fire under Lena, and she knew she had to fix things as soon as possible. She rushed from the hospital to his apartment, grateful the doorman knew her so she didn't have to be buzzed in. She was actually quite worried that Thomas wouldn't want to see her at all. If he didn't give her a chance to explain what had happened, that what was she supposed to do?
His door looked dark and imposing as she approached it, hoping that what lay beyond was sympathetic and wonderful Thomas, and not a new Thomas who might hold a grudge. She raised a hand to knock, and then did so quickly before she could talk herself out of it. The butterflies in her stomach seemed to increase in size when she heard footsteps and then the door opened-
"Lena-" Lena studied Thomas' face and, regretfully, saw a lot of pain staring back at her. "Wh- Oh my god, your eye! What happened?" She watched as his own pain faded, replaced with a look of worry for her well-being. He reached for her cheek, clearly before he remembered that wasn't something he should do any more, and Lena reacted with cat-like reflexes, catching his wrist in her own hand. He looked shocked for an instant, but he didn't pull away, and the sympathetic look on his face didn't fade.
Without him saying anything else, she knew everything would be okay, though she didn't drop his arm.
"Long story," she breathed. "Is anyone else with you?"
He didn't look any less worried, though the pain crept back in. "Sorry. No, I'm alone. Uhm...did you come for your things? I could clear out. Maybe sit with the neighbours for a while so you can get whatever you need and you don't have to...feel crowded or anything."
The urge to wrap her arms around him was actually quite intense, but there were other things she needed to know before that could happen. "No, Thomas. That's not what I came for. It might seem like a weird question, but did you leave the apartment on Tuesday? Did you come to my place?"
"No? I've only really gone to the hospital to see Maddy in the last week. And that was on Thursday. Did something happen at your apartment?"
Lena let out a dry laugh and then she rolled her eyes. "Yeah. Yeah something fucking happened and I fucking thought- Argh."
"Are you alright, Lena? Forget what happened between us for a moment, okay? You can tell me what's wrong. Did someone hurt you?" There was such concern in his eyes. He was looking past his own pain for her. She could kiss him.
"Yes, someone hurt me."
More sympathy written all over his face. "Oh, Lena. Is that why you're still holding my wrist in a death grip?" he asked, his tone more curious than anything else.
She didn't let go, but she did loosen her grip. She had been holding on quite tightly. "Is- Is it making you mad?" she asked, testing it out because she was still a little wary of him.
"Of course not," he replied as easily as ever. "It's my only good hand though, so it does have me a little concerned for my sex life in the event that you squeeze down too hard."
That finally made Lena drop his hand, but only so she could slap her own over her mouth as she giggled. "Oh my god, Thomas," she said, her voice muffled by her own fingers. That was the Thomas she had missed. He was ridiculous and humble and he hadn't had time to joke around much after his operation. He seemed more like himself today, only obviously heart-broken and struggling to contain it.
"Just being honest," he said with a small smile. "Do you want to come in? I can make you some tea. I have some Tylenol too, if the bruise still hurts?" She nodded and even closed the door behind her, which was a huge step towards trusting him. "Can I see?" he asked, reaching out for her again, but more slowly this time. She let him, only shaking slightly until his gentle fingers brushed her cheek. She heard him suck air through his teeth in sympathy. "It looks really bad. Do you need some ice?"
"No, I iced it after it happened." She was reminded of the gentle way he had cared for her after Lucifer had played his games. The way he had carried her around and helped her into the bath when she had sprained her ankle. She only hoped he would be so gentle with her when she explained why she had broken his heart. "Thomas, I- I thought it was you."
Thomas dropped his hand, but only in confusion. "I'm sorry, what?" he asked, his voice only ever gentle.
Her lips were getting ragged from how much she was chewing on them. "Whatever it was that hurt Maddy...we think it was a demon, it could read minds and change shapes and it came to my house looking like you. And it hit me and I thought- I thought you hit me. That was why I broke up with you." She sounded so regretful, and Thomas' reaction surprised her.
"A demon did that? Jesus, did it do anything else? Are you alright?" Everything he said was focused on her well-being. She probably shouldn't have been so shocked because that was essentially Thomas' M.O, but she still felt a little taken aback.
"It hurts, but it's already healing," she assured him. "Thomas. I'm so sorry! I thought you hit me and I wasn't going to stick around to get hurt again. I feel so terrible!"
It was hard then, to gauge anything Thomas was feeling. He looked down at her, but his face seemed impassive and he didn't speak for longer than she was really comfortable with. Then, finally, he said, "I just had brain surgery and I have occasional periods where I don't act like myself. Besides, if this thing looked like me, why would there be a reason to assume it wasn't."
"I could have asked," she said sadly.
Thomas shook his head and when he reached for her hands, she let him take them. "It isn't your fault, Lena. You were hurt, and you reacted with strength. You did the exact right thing with the information you had. Really. And if anyone says otherwise, they're wrong. I know I've been unpredictable lately. I understand."
His words meant so much to her, and she felt so relieved. "I was just so worried you would blame me."
"No, Lena," he shook his head again. "You didn't do anything wrong."
"So I can be your girlfriend again?" She asked, and when he nodded, she leaned in to kiss him. She was shocked when he put his hands on her shoulders to stop him. "Er- Something wrong?"
"Not wrong per se," Thomas said, his ears flushing red. "I slept with Serenity the other day. She came to make me feel better and then it just...happened. And I had to tell you that before you kiss me, otherwise I'm an asshole."
Lena snorted at him. "Well you had been dumped without understanding why. Are you okay about it?" She knew how much Serenity had meant to him. She was hardly going to get jealous that he had slept with someone while they were broken up. That wasn't her style. She just hoped he wouldn't get hurt because of it.
"Yeah fine. No pining or...anything. We talked about it afterwards so we were both aware it wasn't going to be a thing. I was just hurting and there was nostalgia. I'm sorry."
"If I have nothing to apologise for, neither do you," she assured him. "Can I please kiss you now?" She was still a little nervous when she looked at him because she kept picturing his face twisted in anger before her cheek exploded in pain. But then he leaned in and captured her lips in a kiss, and the nerves faded away. She wrapped her arms around him and felt her heart lift for the first time in days.
Sure, they would have to eventually explain it to everyone else, but for now all she cared about was that he hadn't been the one to hit her, and he didn't hate her for assuming he had. When the kiss ended, she said, "I was just so upset that the one person I saw myself actually settling down with had hurt me. I was so going to decide to be a nun or something," she laughed.
"I'm so sorry this was done to you, Lena. Come on. Sit down, and I'll get you that tea and some painkillers. I have vicodin!" he said cheerfully, and Lena just laughed.
