Charlotte had been visiting some friends in Williamsburg, though they had kicked her out at dinner time. Not that she minded. They had a young child and Charlotte found the ritual of trying to feed the fussy spawn incredibly grating. Sure, she had grown up taking care of her younger siblings, but in her memory those children had been angels. It never occurred to her that it was most likely because she cared about them and saw them in a different light.
Free from trying to have conversation with a screaming baby in the room, Charlotte felt light and happy. Her brother was healing from his brain surgery, and though her family was still facing terrible tragedy, things were okay for now.
She had heard about Fette Sau several times and she knew they had German potato salad, which was one of her favourite things. She basically loved any kind of meat as well, so it wasn't difficult to lure her in. She did, however, feel slightly awkward heading in alone. It was rare she ate by herself at restaurants and when she did, she always felt slightly judged by the other patrons. Still, she lined up and then smiled at the young man ahead of her. "Hello," she said cheerfully. "Smells amazing."
