WHO: Polyxena and Achilles
WHAT: So...I have news.
WHEN: Monday night
WHERE: Achilles' place

The moment Polyxena was sure, she had made her way to Achilles' place. He had to know. She had taken two tests and gone to see a doctor, there was no way she could be any more sure of what was happening here, and she didn't know how Achilles was going to take it.

She knocked on his door and waited for him to reply, feeling anxious and panicked. What if he blamed her? What if he told her to leave? What if he decided she didn't deserve to live again?!

Achilles had not been expecting company, usually he and Polyxena had a schedule unless something came up. He always kept an open door policy for her, there were few who even had such a luxuary.

At the knock however he assumed it to be someone else. His agent perhaps. There on the other side was Polyxena but she looked frazzled---a disposition he had not seen of her for some time. It was as if her strength had been zapped right from her. It startled him as he ushered her inside. He put his hands on her shoulders, guiding her to sit. "You don't look yourself," he threaded a piece of hair from her face to place warmly behind her ear. Was she shaking? She was so pale, it worried him.

Polyxena was touched at how gentle he was with her. That a warrior could take such care was startling at times.

She looked up at him, wondering how exactly to break the news. "I have news," she said softly. "I went to see a doctor today."

His hands braced her shoulders. Such large hands that could crush a man's skull. Hands that had carried so much blood on them that they were forever stained from the memories. Hands that softly massaged the tense muscles around her neck, though they could snap it just as easily. "Are you ill?" He continued that gentle massage, thumbs pressed into the nape of her neck, fingers wrapped around against her collarbone. He wouldn't hurt her.

It was for the best that she wasn't afraid of him as he massaged her neck. She smiled and rolled her head around a little before shaking it. "Not sick," she admitted, "pregnant."

Her words shot by him in a blur. He was quiet in trying to grasp what she had just said to him, but his silence lingered, the massage to her shoulders still. He didn't answer her for the longest time, simply leaned in to kiss the top of her head.

"You are certain?" he questioned, but not in anger or loathe. He just wanted to know so he didn't dig his hopes up too high. He had never truly been a father.

That was not the reaction she had been expecting, but she wasn't going to complain. "I'm certain," she admitted. "I took the test several times and a doctor confirmed. How...are you?"

He was aware that perhaps it sounded strained, his fishing for some sort of reply when she left him quite speechless. They'd dealt with his son before (his real one), and clearly he was never a role model for a great father figure. Achilles was always the legend. He was a name. Somehow the idea of being a real father seemed so far out of reach.

He was always so careful with her, but right now he was far from the comfort she really needed. He noted that when she asked how he was. He moved around from where she sat to take the seat beside her on the couch. "Forgive me. That was not the question I should be asking." He took her hand, looking at those pale, thin fingers of hers. He took a deep breath, gray-green eyes finally coming to rest with hers. "It leaves me speechless." Not that they were always careful, but he never imagined a child being part of the equation.

Polyxena just blinked at him and then she went to go sit beside him. "I would have asked the same question if it was me," she said easily. And she would have to. Variations on 'are you serious?!' were normal. "I don't know what I want to do about this, but it definitely depends on your thoughts too."

Achilles reached out to softly touch her face with the backs of his knuckles against her cheek. He wasn't the one carrying the child. He just wondered what he had (if anything) to offer a child. "It's ultimately your decision. I would choose that you keep it." Call it old fashioned but the way in which humans took away life before it could even be born was disgusting to him.

She chewed on her lip for a moment and then said, "if you want me to keep this child, does that mean you want to be involved?" Asking her to keep it and then refusing to have anything to do with it would be a bit of a dick move.

He had deserved that question. He had left a girl no younger than thirteen on an island pregnant with one of his own while he trotted off to war for glory. He wouldn't make that mistake again. It wasn't fair to her, to the unborn child or the legacy he left behind. His own father had ruined what little relationship they had by being absent.

"I won't do that to you, Polyxena. I've tortured you enough in the past." And he wouldn't. He wasn't afraid of the father he would be, but he was concerned that he had little to offer.

She smiled then, reaching for his hand. "Alright then." She had been leaning towards keeping it too, but she had to know his feelings on the matter first. "I'm a little scared, but I think I can do this." She had so many siblings, she knew about children.

"You shouldn't be afraid. You have more to offer than I as a parent." She had had sisters and brothers, most of which he and his men had taken from her. "You grew up with family." She knew what it meant to be loved and needed.

"I did," she said with a smile. And she understood what he was saying between the lines as well. "I can show you everything you need to know, Achilles."

"I failed once as a father. There's a chance I will again." Even though it was hard to believe Achilles purposefully failing at anything. He took pride in everything he did. It hurt him when seeing Neoptolemus and the mess of a man he had turned into.

"You had other priorities at the time," she said, trying not to react to the fact that Achilles had mentioned the man who killed her. "This will be different."

"I chose the fame and glory over...." he shook his head, holding her face softly in his large hands. Neoptolemus had done his duty as his son to his honor by sacrificing her blood for him. It was a different time. The rules had changed as they matured in this modern time, Polyxena was the one that was showing him he could grow and not be stuck in his past. She might be surprisingly calm in the situation, but even the softest of features would give her away. He'd been with her long enough now to notice all the small imperfections on her face. She was not emotionless. Neither was he.

"No son of mine will ever hurt you again." that he made as a promise.

His words brought a wide smiled to her face and she leaned in to kiss him. "We're going to have a baby. A tiny little baby."

As mixed as his feelings were, to see that smile on her face melted away any discomfort. She deserved to smile more often. He rested an arm around her shoulder, pulling her into his embrace, warm and soft. "So it seems."
