WHO: Cassandra & Piper
WHEN: Monday afternoon
WHERE: Their house
WHAT: Happy Birthday

Cassandra decided that she would brave the store that she knew was nearby to Lewis Carroll's home. He had given her money, but she mostly put it away in a box beneath her bed. She wasn't a shopper.

But today she clutched that money tightly in hand as she walked alone through the brightly lit aisles, more lucid and thus more scared. When the madness came upon her she was fearless, led only by visions and sure feet. But when it receded she was nothing but a young girl and everything seemed so threatening.

But she got what she had come for an returned home, unwrapping her scarf in the kitchen as she put the little candle into the top of the blue-iced cupcake. Then, after it was lit, she carried it very carefully to Piper's room where the door was open. Standing in the doorway she said, "Happy Birthday. I don't know the song."

Piper had been in her room, flipping through one of her books. She supposed it could loosely be termed 'studying', but she was only retaining about half of what she read.

She looked up when she heard Cassandra's voice, and the cupcake in her hands made her smile. "Oh, thank you, Cassandra," she said, standing up to greet her. "Come on in, if you want."

Cassandra walked carefully into the room, being slow in the fear that the flame might go out before it got to Piper. "I saw this on the television, and I think that it's right. We didn't celebrate birthdays in Troy. It's very different now."

"It's perfect," Piper told her. "I don't really celebrate my birthdays either, it's mostly my mum who remembers."

"Mothers remember many things," Cassandra agreed and then held the cupcake out in front of you. "You're supposed to blow it out for good luck."

Piper remembered her mother telling her, 'make a wish, quick, love, before the flames go out'. And she's wished for the sorts of things that little girls wish for: a doll, a new bike, and, until she was 18, for her father to come home, even though he never had.

She closed her eyes and blew out the candle. "Luck to get me through the year," she said, smiling.

"You'll make it through the year," Cassandra said, though she knew saying it meant that Piper wouldn't believe it. Still she her words were dismissed after all these centuries, Apollo's curse strong and enduring.

"God, I hope so," Piper sighed. "Sometimes it feels like the educational system is going to swallow me whole. One more year, I can do it, right?" She pushed some hair out of her face. "But never mind that. Let's have some cake, yeah?"

"There's only enough for one," Cassandra told her. "I bought it from the store for you."

"You did, and that was very sweet of you," Piper said. "But it's been quite a while since I got to share birthday cake with anyone." She ducked into the kitchen for a knife, cutting the cupcake in half. She came back to her room, offering half to the other girl.

Cassandra sat down on Piper's floor, cross-legged, and held the half cupcake in her hand as she watched the woman. "What will you do for the rest of your birthday?"

Piper bit into her cupcake and shrugged. "I already talked to my mum, and I'm not really up for studying more, but then again, when am I ever? Maybe I'll have a glass of wine and watch a movie. What a wild and crazy life I lead."
