"Not really," Jesse shrugged. "That sounds cold, but it's really not difficult. He threw me out. Told me he wasn't having a deviant under his roof." He took a long drink from his beer. "The worst part, though. He told me he was glad my mother had died, so she didn't have to see how I'd grown up." He shoved his fingers through his hair, pushing it out of his face. "Sorry," he said quietly. "My family's just been on my mind lately, I guess."
"I wish I'd thought to get inland, like your friend," he said. "I don't know where I'd have gone, but that seems like the smart thing to do."
