Who: Rhode [Narrative]
What: Going home
When: Monday afternoon
Where: The island of Rhodes
With Triton now off following his own path, Rhode had no one to really accompany her back to Rhodes. But that was alright, because if she was being honest with herself, she really wanted a little time to herself to just relax and breathe, to swim in the ocean and not worry about anything.
She touched down at Diagoras Airport in the bluish light before dawn, collecting her bags and hailing a cab. She checked in to her hotel, which was right on the beach, and only went into her room long enough to put her suitcases away. Then she was headed for the beach. At 5 a.m., it was deserted, but she hardly minded. She knew this beach like the back of her hand, and with every step, she felt more and more like herself. The waves tangled around her feet, and even the wind seemed to say, 'Welcome back. You were missed. Welcome home.' Tears welled up in her eyes. She didn't know how much she'd missed her island, but now that she was back, it felt like she'd regained a piece of herself. She felt complete.
She sat down in the sand, her skirt pulled up over knees, feet and legs in the water. One hand rested protectively over her ever-growing bump. She liked to talk to her growing baby, about anything and everything, and right now...right now it felt so important that she do so.
"When you're old enough, me and your daddy are going to bring you here," she promised. "We'll all swim in the ocean together, and you'll see where the Colossus stood. This place...this place is my home, this place is mine to look after, and it's always pained me to be away. When you see it, you'll see what I mean, I think. It's beautiful. It's still vibrant and alive, the world didn't forget."
The sky slowly lightened as she sat there and talked to the baby in her womb, the tide rolling in and out. Pink and orange and gold streaked across the sky, staining the ocean with a soft, golden glow. Rhode pushed herself up and smiled, looking out at the calm sea, relishing the moment of perfect tranquility. Soon enough, she'd have to go back. Soon enough, it'd be time to face her life in New York and her responsibilities.
But not now. Not just yet.
