Who: Jamie Kemp & Theseus Stavros
What: In person meetings!
When: Thursday afternoon
Where: Coffee shop
Warnings: TBD

Jamie didn't go out much after school. He usually went straight home and threw himself into whatever he was working on at the time, that and his homework. But this afternoon, his workload was, thankfully, lighter than normal, so he decided to duck into a coffee shop for a drink on the way home.

He had a little time to spare, so he found a seat which was, thankfully, below the heating vent, and he curled into the seat, sipping his latte. The shop wasn't terribly busy, the only sounds came from the overhead radio and the low hum of conversation from the other patrons. He set his backpack on the floor, debating getting out his book to pass the time with.

It was cold, and rather needing some coffee Theseus decides to duck into the store. He missed his scooter, but he'd still be freezing even if it was fixed. Thankfully the shop instantly made him warmer and he gave the barista's a smile before ordering.

He removed his hat and ran his fingers through his curls as he waited before spotting the figure. He picked up his cup and walked to him with a smile. "Do I know you. Sorry, you look very familiar." Theseus never had any issues with going up to people or talking to them. He figured it be a good skill to have once he was behind the camera. "And just tell me to fuck off if I'm bothering you, by the way."

Jamie looked up from his napkin, where he'd started doodling in lieu of getting out his book. "No, it's fine," he said. "You're not bothering me, because so do you, strangely enough. I'm Jamie, by the way."

He sipped from his coffee but didn't sit down yet. He wasn't that rude. "Right. I think we chatted on the internet?" He gave a laugh, "wow. Yeah. Hello I'm from the internet. Totally legit. Theseus by the way. Can I sit?"

Jamie laughed softly. "No, I remember. The film student, right?" He capped his pen and stuck it behind his ear. "Sure, go ahead," he said, waving at the opposite seat.

He took a seat and set his cup on the table. "Not usually how people remember me by, but I'll take it. You're applying for SVA right?" He picked up his cup, "good luck. Sure you'll get in. Tried myself. Wasn't so lucky."

Jamie nodded. "I bet not, but it's the first thing that popped into my head. And yeah, I am, the portfolio is all but done, and thank god for that."

"I'm sorry to hear that," he said. "The whole process is really intense, I'll be biting my nails until I hear either way."

"Break a leg either way man. I ended going to Columbia. It's not bad there. SVA seems more attuned to independents, and I am one to gleefully sell my soul to Hollywood so." Grinning he removed his coat and scarf. "Just don't burn yourself out. Seen it happen. People focus so much on getting there they have nothing left for when they do get there."

He chuckled, "And I'm done being preachy. Hey randomly weird question what's your focus? People or backgrounds?"

"Thanks," he said, flashing a grin. "If I end up not getting in, I applied to Columbia and NYU and a couple others. But SVA would be my dream, since, like you said, it's more geared toward independents." That made him laugh a little. "Hey, at least you're honest."

"Yeah, I had a brush with that a few weeks ago," he said, pulling a face. "My dad had to pretty much pry me out of my room and make me sleep. I want to enjoy what I do, not have it feel like a chore."

He smiled. "It's fine. Mostly backgrounds. I'm working on people, but my backgrounds are stronger."

"Hey man if you end up in Columbia come look me and Aidan up. We'll show you around." He sipped from the coffee and shrugged. "It's one of my better qualities."

"I don't know how much help I can be there. I don't draw. Movies are easy.. Besides I'm very live life as it comes kind of guy. I don't worry about all too much." He nodded, "Mind if I see? Thing is I gotta throw something together for the end of this semester. I'm basically bribing everyone I know. I gotta story, I just need a storyboard and backgrounds. My buddy Aidan's good with people and I figure you can put it on your portfolio."

"I will definitely do that," he said. "And it's a good quality to have."

"I'm figuring out that that mindset will be better for my overall health," Jamie said. He rooted around in his backpack and pulled out his sketchbook, opening it to a page he thought Theseus might appreciate. "Not sure if this is what you meant, but I've got a few others." He was usually a little apprehensive about showing his art to people that weren't family or Kat, and that was still there a little, in the back of his mind.

He glanced over the page, but didn't take the book. He wouldn't want anyone touching his crap either. "I like it. Pretty good. Here how are you with fantasy? Horror, that sort of thing? See everything's been done so finding an original idea is hard. I'm going back to the old tales, the old myths. But do it from the monster's perspective."

He picked up his cup and sipped from it. "The whole, what we believe is evil may not be so route. We always see the hero versus monster from the hero. Monster plagues cities but in cases like Medusa, that's not always what happens. I mean do they know, understand? Are they monsters because we make them, because their surroundings do? Do they consider themselves monsters. And I want to do that. I want to make people think." He held up his cup, "perception isn't reality. Godfather taught me that."

"Thanks," he said, the smile a bit more real now. He always waited on pins and needles until he got someone's opinion of something he'd made. He pulled the book closer to him, flipping a few pages until he found the one he was looking for. "I know, it's not terribly original, but it might give you an idea. I like the concept, it's different."

He listened as Theseus talked, drinking his coffee while he processed everything. "That's a really interesting question," he said after a moment. "I never really thought about it from their point of view before, but now I kind of want to know. It's an interesting thing to think about."

He gave a wide grin, "see and if I can just make one person think that, and then look around and think about their lives and perception I'll feel accomplished. Now I wouldn't say not to Oscars either, but those are high hopes and dreams to have." He glanced over the drawing then, "I like it. And just so you know this isn't required. You can tell me to fuck off."

He shrugged, "but I got a chance. I'm interning for a producer that has won awards on a chance. Gotta pass it on you know. And it's not for ages anyway. Just draw me a monster. Something scary. Something you wouldn't want to run into. I want to make it appear like the monster is seen from one angle, then shift it. Appearances are deceiving and all. But don't rush it. Make sure you got your school sorted first."

"You're broadening people's horizons," he said with a grin of his own, sipping at the last of his latte. "And who knows? Oscars and accolades may very well follow."

"Nah, now I'm getting all sorts of 'ideas'," he said, waving his hands as he said the last word. "I'm pretty sure I can come up with something that'll work."

"Hey, that's awesome," he said. "Sounds badass. I haven't drawn many monsters before, I can work on that, I haven't done...a lot of horror before, but I like challenges. School is pretty much sorted, as far as current assignments go, and I have two pieces to polish for the portfolio."

He took out his lighter and started fiddling with it. It was a nervous tick and a sign he needed a smoke, but he wasn't rude enough to run out either. "Hopefully. People like their black and white though. They don't like the status quo challenged. Look at Hollywood right now. They want ideas that will sell, that's the same as any other. Anything new isn't going to be wanted."

He chuckled, "good. Take your time. No rush. And hey always good to do something new. Expand. Niche's are well and good but they're also really good gilded cages if you're not careful. You may end up looking around and going 'well, fuck this'. Always be better. My dad used to say that."

"True, but at the same time, you do the same idea long enough, it gets boring," Jamie said. "At least, that's my opinion. I'd rather take a chance on something different, then go and see something that I can predict the ending of from a mile off."

Jamie laughed. "I'm 18, hopefully I don't have any sort of niche yet. But it's still good advice, your dad sounds like a wise man. Plus, you know. Drawing monsters. It sounds awesome."

"Sounded, passed when I was 16." He shrugged. He often mentioned it. "He's who got me into all this. His side was all lawyers and doctors and they wanted me to do the same thing. We saw The Godfather and I told him I wanted to do that. And he said, 'then do it kid'. And here I am." He sighed, "unfortunately I don't think that's the majority. How many hangovers do you think we'll get because people thought it was funny."

He rolled his eyes. "I hope someone shoots me if I ever get like that. Because, clearly, I've gone and lost my mind. I mean how many movies win awards because they were original, or because people like the safe bet? But if I think like that I also depress myself."

"I'm sorry," Jamie said. "He sounds like he was pretty cool. My dad raised me by himself, he always encouraged me to do anything I wanted. Said he knew I had it in me."

He nodded. "Yeah, I hear you there. There's a line between funny and stupid/gross, and a lot of what comes out tends to pole vault over it. Maybe you'll be the first domino in the change that brings change."

"And we can't have that," Jamie said. "I'd like to hope it's the first one, but somehow, I can't help thinking that, like, 75% are given to the safe bet. Which, like you said, is sort of depressing."

"He was." He set his hand on one of his arms, tracing along the dragonfly he had there. "And props to your old man for that. My poor Ma had to do it for me. She's a saint for it. Many other things too."

He nodded. "Yeah. But like you said I want to be that domino you know. Or at least inspire someone else to be it. I figure when I'm old and grey and I can look back and be proud, I've done a good job. I don't want to regret anything, so I don't plan on it. Live life at it's fullest. Be kind of like my namesake. Without the kidnap and abandoning."

He tapped the lighter on the table a moment, watching Jamie before deciding on a risk. "so, and I won't take offense at a no here, but are you doing anything on the weekend?"

"He's one of the strongest people I know," Jamie said. "I never knew my mom, so sometimes he was mom, dad, and best friend, all in one. Props to single parents, man, I don't know how they do it."

"'We must be the change we wish to see in the world'," he quoted. "Think that was Gandhi. But that's a good goal to have, I think. Especially leaving out the kidnapping and abandoning."

His stomach swooped slightly at the question. "No, nothing special," he said. "I usually just draw some and do whatever."

"Probably with a lot of magic." He'd always respect his mother for what she'd done. It was one of the reasons he didn't mind her getting re-married. He felt his mother deserved the world.

"Good way of going about it either way. Try your best." He laughed then, "yeah I try not to do that. You have no idea about the jokes, so I make them myself now."

He gave a grin to the response, glad he hadn't read Jamie wrong. "Great. There's nothing good out but you want to go grab dinner or something?"

"It wouldn't surprise me," Jamie said, and he was mostly serious.

"It's really all we can do, you know?" Jamie asked. "I wondered about that, but sometimes people can be touchy about their names."

He felt the smile slowly blossom over his face. "Yeah," he said. "Yeah, I'd like that."

He rolled his eyes. "Ma thought she was funny. Apparently it's payback for ten hours of labor or some such nonsense." He didn't really mind though. At least his name was different.

"You got a cute smile," he gave with a wink before rising. He leaned down and wrote his number down. "If you give me yours I'll give you a call and pick you up? I know a decent place. I don't mean to rush off but I got to get to my internship."

"Yeah, I can't imagine going through labor for 10 hours would be very much fun," Jamie said.

Jamie was suddenly thankful for his slightly darker skin, that way his blush wasn't as obvious. He did say, "Thank you," though, pulling his pen out from behind his ear and writing down his number. "Sounds good to me. And don't worry about it, I should be heading home anyway."

He took the number with a smile before putting his coat and hat back on. "I'll call you then and see you on the weekend." He was already looking forward to it. He put his scarf on before leaving, a bit sad he had to. He'd been rather enjoying himself.
