WHO: Demeter & Patroclus
WHEN: Sunday morning
WHERE: Pattycakes' hospital room
WHAT: It's a friendly Olympian visit! Collect the whole set!

If there was one thing that could be said for the Olympians it was that they didn't take insult lightly, nor did they accept it towards any of their fellows. In truth so many of the Olympians were (in the least) uncomfortable with each other, but they were a united force if one of them was struck against.

Thus it was that Demeter felt no surprise when the brothers who usually showed loathing or indifference towards her now came to her rescue. She would have done the same were it a mortal disrespecting them in such a public manner.

But the benefit of Achilles' little temper tantrum was that it had informed her of what had become of Patroclus. Achilles Demeter found to be a distasteful little beast, but Patroclus had the proper respect for his betters and she liked that.

So it was to Patroclus' hospital room that Demeter came today, careful that the bouquet of flowers in her arms didn't feel her winter chill and wither before she even got there. He was sleeping though and so Demeter simply came in and began arranging them in a vase, knowing he would wake soon enough.

Patroclus woke slowly, having slept hard after being tortured by his friend and terrified by the Erinyes.

When he opened his eyes, they rested upon Demeter and if he could have smiled, he would have. His jaw was even more sore today, since Achilles had grabbed hold of it and shook him to get information on Briseis.

"Demeter," he said as clearly as he could. "You honor me."

"Don't try to speak too much," Demeter told him, looking at his jaw carefully. "The nurses tell me that will only pain you."

She sat down on the little plastic hospital chair beside his bed, thick curls lying down across her shoulders as though she'd just exited a salon. (Being an Olympian meant, for the most part, looking fantastic with very little effort.) "I brought flowers as I thought a hospital room could using brightening."

Patroclus mimed writing for her and then he grabbed the huge notebook and the pen he had since been provided with from the gift shop around the corner. It said 'Get Better!' as if it was a command and had a pink teddy bear on it, but he could work it. The pen was purple because someone had thought it was funny.

Thank you so much for the flours and it is nice to see you. How are you today?

And then he held it up to her to read.

Demeter read his words and then gave him a small smile, although it was not all that exuberant. "Well," she told him with a nod, "But I must bear to you bad news of your old general. I told Achilleus that I was not impressed with his attack on you and he chose to insult my intelligence over it." Her tone was icy when she spoke of it. "I'm afraid that Hades released the Kindly Ones to punish his impudence against the Gods."

Patroclus swallowed roughly and he nodded. He remembered. Then, with shaking hands, he wrote I saw them. They took him out side. I can't argue with his punishmunt becose he shouldn't have insulted you. But I still worry. Do you know where he is now?

"He was taken to King Hades and from what I gather your friend is to be judged for his crimes by Zeus." She looked at him with a little sympathy, because he was a sweet child who had the proper respect. "I would not expect such judgments to be kind. His insults extended to the Sky King."

Patroclus simply stared at Demeter for a moment and then he lowered his eyes, ashamed on behalf of Achilles. He had insulted Zeus?

He very much doubted he would see Achilles again any time soon, and that made it a little hard for Patroclus to breathe, even now. He kept his composure here in front of Demeter, though he planned to break down later.
Whatever the Sky King decides, it is his right to do so. It will be fair. Though I wish he had been more respektfull.

The errors in Patroclus' spelling was rather endearing to Demeter and she felt somewhat maternal over him because of it. But then, Demeter felt maternal to half the world if she were to be honest with herself.

"As do I," she agreed. "I tempered my own rage out of a sense of courtesy to you, as I am grateful that you listened to my woes previously, but Achilles insisted on continuing." Not that Demeter needed to really explain herself to this mortal child. She was an Olympian, the Earth Mother of all.

Patroclus shook his head in dismay yet again. He just had to anger the gods, didn't he?

I thank you for your curtesy towards my general who showed none to you. If I could make amends for him I would. But he will be juged for his own mistakes as it should be.

And I will lissen to you whenever you would speak to me.

"Thank you," Demeter said with a nod of her head. "But I come here today simply to keep you company. But," she continued, reaching out to take the paper from in front of him and the pen from his hand, "as I have no desire to speak of my troubles, and you should not speak at all, we're going to play a game." Demeter was drawing a rectangular array of dots onto the page as she spoke. "In my American life I've taught school children many times and this game keeps them occupied for hours. The number of high school mathematics classes that I have overseen where they were playing this instead of doing their work was near mind-boggling."

Patroclus laughed and he smiled with his eyes, which might have must looked like squinting. He hoped she knew what he was getting at there.

When she handed him the paper back, Patroclus studied the dots carefully, looking incredibly studious as he did so. Then he painstakingly set about drawing a single line before handing it back to her with a pleased look on his face.

It was sort of adorable, Demeter thought. She drew her own line and they passed it back and forth between them as she spoke about her plans for her garden when spring arrived. (Whether he was interested or not, she still spoke. Demeter liked talking about gardens.)

They were filling up the page with boxes when she spotted something like a grimace cross his features. She raised her eyes as she drew her line and asked, "are you in pain?"

Patroclus was enjoying the game and the garden talk. It was nice having an excuse not to say anything, because much of the time he just wanted to listen to other people anyway.

And then the clawing in Patroclus' stomach rose to a sharp pang all at once and he grimaced and she noticed.

Indicating that he wanted the notebook back, he wrote, I'm alright! I'm just very hungry. I can't eat solid food and lickid licu not solid diets are not very satisfying. They told me I will lose a lot of weigt in 6 weeks because I can only drink things.

As a goddess of harvest and plenty, there was nothing that was as sure to play on Demeter's motherly and sympathetic side as someone saying that they were hungry. All she wanted to do was feed the entire world.

She was also smart enough to realise that her worship - that all of their worship as Greeks - was so weakened in these times that she needed as much of it as she could get. She was still so much stronger than most of her fellow Gods, but nothing like she used to have.

So she reached out with a gentle expression on her face and stroked Patroclus' forehead lightly. Although she was weakened by the season she could still do this and she released into the once-mortal the satisfied feeling of fullness, of a stomach of food and the comfort of good eating.

Patroclus stared at Demeter in wonder as the ache in his belly simply evaporated into nothingness. He felt so blissfully full and satisfied and he couldn't quite believe it. He didn't even reach for his pen and paper. Demeter deserved to hear his voice thank her.

"Thank you, Thesmophoros. Thank you so much." He was going to worship the hell out of her for this. "I will pray and burn candles in your name."

Demeter's nod was a serene expression and an acceptance of his offer. Without his prayers she wouldn't continue to do such a thing for him, after all. "It should last a few days," she told him. "I'll return to visit you again after that. Your enduring faithfulness to the Gods is to be rewarded, Patroclus."

The look he gave her betrayed how utterly enthralled he was. He ducked his head shyly and said, "I only do what I should. But I thank you." And then he looked up, his expression cheeky. "And I am still going to win at this line and dot game."

The goddess laughed at his claim and looked down at the paper to examine how many of the boxes were marked with her 'D' to his 'P' and he did seem to have the lead on her. "I'm sure I can still overpower you," she told him with a smirk. "And if not I can throw a tantrum the likes of which you've never before seen." She gave him a wink and a smile as a promise that she wouldn't actually go crazy and turn him into something.
