WHO: Natalie & Conrad
WHEN: Christmas Eve
WHERE: Conrad's place
WHAT: General cuteness.

Natalie had taken to sometimes wearing the engagement ring that Conrad had bought her. It may have been the product of a fake engagement to impress old school friends, but that was the only thing fake about it. Natalie loved that ring, even if she was a little bit terrified to ever ask how much it had cost.

The first time he'd seen her wearing it a few months ago, Natalie had been sure to tell him right away what it meant. It's not an engagement ring, she'd said, but it is something beautiful given to me by a man I love.

Natalie was not ready to be engaged, or married, or have kids. These were all things that Future Natalie would think about. Present Natalie was happy enough with the way things were. She had enough trouble trying not to sabotage this relationship without the added pressure of some sort of wedding.

(She liked to hope she'd gotten better - at her jealousy, at her attempts to push him away, at the way she could just generally be rather difficult. She tried, but sometimes she knew she was intolerable. So she was glad when Conrad tolerated her, when he made his attempts to calm her down and understand her insecurities.)

She was wearing the ring tonight when she arrived on Conrad's doorstep, coupled with a dress just as red and her coat already off and in hand. The outfit was completed by a Santa hat sitting lopsided on her head. Natalie gave his door a quick half dozen knocks and then began singing Jingle Bells, determined to continue until the door opened.

She had changed in so many ways. Conrad could appreciate her attempts. He trusted her again which was dangerous, but Natalie wasn't the only culprit into the times this relationship had fallen apart. They were an open book now. No secrets. No holding back on things the other deserved to know. He had messed up to, but he hoped they were both in more control for the road ahead wherever it took them.

The house smelled of fresh pine. There was a little tree no higher than his knee seated on the living room table with two special gifts under the tree. One was Emma's. The other Natalie's. An estranged daughter did a lot to open his eyes. Life was always more important when there were people still there to pick you up when you fell.

He had dressed in simple slacks and a skinny deep red satin tie and white shirt. He wasn't nearly as festive as Natalie when he opened the door, Moritz skating over in happy greeting.

"Out-doing me as always Natalie." He gave her a swift kiss. "I don't clean up nearly as nice." He let her inside a fresh bottle of wine set out on the kitchen counter with two glasses. Dinner was in the oven. "I am glad you could come. I got worried there when you said you might be flying out Christmas Eve. It totally would have ruined my surprise."

"Oh, I don't know," Natalie countered after the kiss, holding onto his tie and grinning. "I think you clean up pretty good. I can certainly stand to look at you." She kissed him again before he led her to the kitchen where she reached for a glass.

"A surprise?" she asked him with raised eyebrows and a grin. "Should I have my eyes closed?"

"I thought so too, but I wouldn't have wanted to dash your hopes too high if I'd decided not to shave." With Conrad's face, since the ordeal with his young self, he decided a little scruff was a good look. But for Natalie, he had cleaned up real nice.

"If you must," he cloaked his hand over her eyes with a light brush to lower her gaze so he could retrieve her present. It was simple, but he knew she would appreciate it. Not nearly as fancy as the ring he'd once bought her, but---"It's from World War II, I couldn't find one from earlier," he'd been looking forever, but finally found a sweetheart locket.

Natalie sat there, grinning with her eyes closed as she waited for him to fetch her present, curiosity eating at her. Once it was in her hand she opened her eyes.

Her smile dropped away, her expression turning to one of amazed surprise. "Oh Con," she breathed, turning it over in her hand and starting to smile again slowly. "It's beautiful. Thank you." It may not have been like the ring she was wearing, but this meant more. She didn't know who had once owned this or who had given it to them, but this necklace was a part of real history. It was a love story from long ago.

She looked up at Con again and leaned forward to kiss him. "Thank you," she said it. "Put it on me?"
