Who: Eve, Uriel
Where: Eve's daycare
When: Saturday
What: "My angel-y eyes have seen things!"

Uriel was not sure if there would be children at the daycare. It was a Saturday, after all. Ideally, there would be no small humans scampering at his feet. He would have stopped by Eve's home, but he didn't actually know where that was, and he felt like it would be rude not to tell her what he'd seen.

He knocked on the front door, shifting from foot to foot as he waited for Eve to answer.

She'd felt the angel long before he'd knock. He ought to be lucky she'd just seen her last child out the door a while ago and was now just cleaning up. Still, with how often Uriel seemed to show up she was intending to make him help her.

She opened the door and without much ado handed him a garbage bag. "Put that in the dumpster. Then you can tell me whatever brought you here." Uriel may have been the one to keep them out of Eden, but she had no issue making them do chores if they insisted on bothering her.

"Oof," Uriel grunted as the bag was handed to him. With a sigh, he turned around and walked to the dumpster. He had long since ceased being surprised at Eve assigning him chores. He hefted the bag into the dumpster effortlessly and then went inside.

"Ah, there are no children," Uriel observed. He could see that they'd been here recently, though. Toys and crayons were scattered about, and he bent to pick up a handful of markers that had taken refuge under a small bookshelf.

"You have a knack for showing up when the last ones leave it seems." She watched him as she straightened things out. She never minded the busy daycare. She had another one helping her, and she rather liked the Norse goddess. They had much in common.

Still. She crossed the room and took the crayons from him. "Now. Stop delaying why are you here? Is it because of Lucifer?" Maybe the Lightbringer had decided to up his little quest for vengeance. She'd been laying low, but she never doubted the tenacity of one of Hell's forces.

"Not that I know of," Uriel said, "but I am not all-seeing. You should still be cautious. No, I'm here because...I believe I've seen Abel."

Uriel was the angel of the Sun, and called the eyes of God. When he chose it, he could see whatever the Sun's rays illuminated. It was always a sensory overload, but Uriel was still sure that he had seen Human Number Three.

"What?" she paled, just a touch because it was still her son. Abel, sweet Abel, who she'd always considered to have taken after herself. Cain had taken more after his father, demanding rather then asking.

Didn't mean she wasn't still upset at God for having created a pissing match between her sons. One that had led to doom and death.

She set her hand to her mouth, then took a seat. Abel. Here. "Are you sure? Where? Is he alright?"

"I am not sure where exactly he is," Uriel said. "My glimpse of him was very fleeting, but I'm certain it was him. He's very easy to recognize. And he seemed fine. Going about his day, doing human things."

The angels would not understand. They had not been parents, had not born the anguish of having one child murdered, the other exiled. All because God gave them a carrot to chase.

She closed her eyes and took a breath. "Thank you." When she opened them she felt calmer and more sure of herself. Less likely to curse God to someone who would not understand. "And my other boy? What about him?" The one followed the other. If Abel was there, she'd extend her hand. To Cain too, even if he'd be less likely to take it.

"I did not see him," Uriel said. He thought about reaching to lay a hand on her shoulder, since humans seemed to find that comforting. He wasn't sure she would welcome that, though. "But with your sons, well, one usually follows the other."

"I know." It hurt her to see them play out that tune time and time again, but where Abel was, Cain was. And she still felt if she had stayed ignorant, her little boys would have known paradise.

With a sigh she got up and started picking things back up. She didn't think Uriel would understand the pain that she carried.

"Are...are you all right?" Uriel asked, unsure how to gauge Eve's reaction. "I thought you would be happier. You love your children very much."

"Of course I do." Sighing she looked at him, "I'm not alright Uriel but you won't understand. You're not a parent, nor even human. Yelling at you about the cruelty of God would get me no farther then if I yelled at my cabinet. You do not understand." Smiling she shrugged, "and you are my friend. My burdens are my own."

Uriel wondered if he should be offended at the implication that he had the emotional capacity of a cabinet. But she'd called him her friend, and that pleased him. He patted her shoulder gently.

"I can listen, though. If you'd like. Or bring you food. Food is soothing."

Protip Uriel: Yes. You should be offended.

She set her hand on his and smiled. For all his oddities, he was kind to her and still treated her right. He was a good a friend as any. She released him and sighed. "No, I'm not hungry. It's just," she paused and shrugged, "I feel my sons were banished and killed, respectively, for my sins."

"God was angry at me, and he took away my little boys for it. Made them chase the carrot of His divine favor." she scoffed. "So I'm angry they'll keep chasing it. Because of the things I did. For a test I was meant to fail. I hate Him for that."

She gave a wry smile and turned, "sometimes I can see why your brother rebelled. God is cruel."

He is like "Incorrect, Eve. I am more emotional. Cabinets can't be grumpy."

Uriel tilted his head, considering Eve's words. Then he shook his head gently. "No. If it was a test, it was for your sons. Not for you. You were given your punishment with your exile from the Garden."

He frowned a little at the slight to his Father, but did not comment. It was a very common sentiment among humans.

"Some test," she rolled her eyes and sat down. "It was unfair. As was my own test. No one sees it through my eyes. They all just see the woman who brought sin and temptation to her husband. All I wanted, ever wanted, was to know.To have a name. I did not wish to be Adam's clay puppet anymore."

Sighing she sat down and put her hands on her lap. "Was I so wrong for that Uriel?" She looked at him. "Father gave us the power to choose, and I did. Why was that wrong?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

...YES.

Uriel's initial instinct was to fall back on his standard response about how it was 1.) none of his business and 2.) he didn't have free will regardless, so it didn't matter what he thought.

But Eve seemed distressed, and she was one of his favorite humans. So it seemed all right to offer her one of his theories, if only because it might make her feel better. Or make her angry. It was difficult to tell with humans.

"Perhaps you were meant to fail," Uriel said, sitting down across from her primly. "Perhaps it was a test you were never supposed to pass."

She chuckled and shook her head, "of course it was. I know that now. Everything was as it was meant to be. I just wish he had not cursed me for it. I'm really not fond of how I am when I am around Adam." He wasn't near so she was freer. "Before, it was the way it always was. He was my husband and therefor I was his. Now I see it differently. I like being my own being."

She sighed, "I can't go back. I can only go forward. As I always have." She smiled at him. "You are a good and true friend Uriel. Thank you for telling me my son is here."

"There is a reward waiting for you at the end of all of this, Eve," Uriel said seriously. "You will have earned rest." He glanced around. "Especially with all the wrangling of children that you do."

She laughed to that, "I actually like doing that. I love children." She gave a fond smile to the mess around her daycare. "But, that does not mean the rest won't be appreciated. I always do wonder though. Which way do I go? I did commit original sin. Where do I rest? I can't go home. Eden's closed to me. It's a concern."

"I'm not so sure," she set a few books back and shrugged. "The Church has called me many a thing. What was that one?" She tilted her head for a moment, "oh yes. 'You are the devil's gateway'. And then the Renaissance never really helped." She sighed, "And as the book says. As it is on Earth, so shall it be in Heaven." She gave her friend a smile, "so I'm not sure I'll ever get to see Father, or that I'll get to spend my days with your brother, once it's all done and over with."

"I am," Uriel said, with complete conviction. "You are good and kind and have suffered your punishments without complaint. You will see Heaven again."
