"We decided that it was for the best not to tell you kids when you were younger, in case it made you worry that we'd divorce or that we didn't love each other. We said we'd tell you when you were older if you asked." Erica shrugged and looked over at Kat with a gentle smile. "So there you go."
"It's not easy for everyone to accept," Erica agreed, nodding as she thought about it. "You know about your aunt." Erica's sister-in-law was living proof of how the human mind didn't always deal well with the knowledge of the supernatural. She had been in and out of hospitals for years after they'd told her the truth and had killed herself five years ago. The girls had never had a chance to get to know their aunt very well, and Erica blamed herself for that.
"Feel him out, I suppose is the best way," Erica suggested. "Start making little suggestions and comments. Better not to just throw him in the deep end."
