Who: Lewis Carrroll & Piper Addison
What: Watching TV and awkwardness!
When: Wednesday evening
Where: Their apartment
Warnings: Ah...awkward kissings? Beyond that, probably not a lot.

Piper was really going to have to buy Jasmine coffee for turning her onto this show. It had grabbed her and pulled her in from the word go. The episode about Alice had both thrown her and made her laugh a little, she'd just had to post about it. And she'd gotten Mr. Carroll into it, too. Might make for a fun night.

Emerging from her room in sleep pants and a tank top, she was carrying her laptop in one hand and clutching a blanket around her shoulders with the other. "Your timing is excellent," she told him. "I hadn't started the next one, and I'm not so far in you can't catch up easily."

"Perfect!" Charles said cheerfully. He had been in the kitchen making caramel corn and fetching a few of the cupcakes he had made for Cassandra the day before.

He moved out to his living room which had a fire burning merrily in the fireplace. Charles did not like the cold and insisted on the apartment being pleasantly warm at all times.

"Ooh, caramel corn!" Piper said happily as he came into the living room. "And cupcakes! This beats studying by a mile, for sure." She snagged some of the caramel corn and popped it in her mouth. "OK, so this show is pretty firmly in the realm of fantasy, but if you can suspend your disbelief a bit, it's actually pretty good," she said, going over the basic outline of the first few episodes with him.

She plugged in the laptop and situated herself near the fire, queueing up the next episode. "So cozy in here, I love it," she remarked, fiddling with the volume controls.

Charles laughed and he handed the bowl of caramel corn over to Piper before setting the cupcakes on the coffee table.

"I am ready to suspend my disbelief, because you know, it's so hard for me," he said with a laugh. "I like it cozy. If I ever make the house too hot though, you should tell me. I tend to bask and forget not everyone likes the live in a tropical apartment."

"I know it's hard, but we can work through it," Piper deadpanned. But she couldn't hold the look forever and just started to laugh. "No, but seriously, it's really good so far. Kind of makes me wonder if there really are objects out there like that."

"Naw, it's fine," she said. "I'm used to cold and damp from back home, but that doesn't mean I enjoyed it. Mum always kept the heat up kind of high in the winter, I loved it. And in the summer we'd sit on the balconies with tea and that shiny cardboard stuff. So nice."

Charles smiled at the nostalgia. He missed England quite a lot, though he didn't miss the damp. "I grew up in a parsonage and it was damp and cold," he sighed. "When I was younger, anyway. When we finally moved to a nicer place, it was wonderful. Then I went away to school. That first home though, it was always cold, even in the summer. The winters were the worst."

Piper smiled as she listened to him talk. "At least you managed to get away from that first place. And agreed, the winters always were the worst part," she said. "Slush and rain and wind and cold. No thank you. It made for some lovely photographs, but it was bollocks to walk anywhere in."

Charles chuckled and he curled up on the sofa. "Bollocks to walk in is right," he said, smiling over at her. He was so glad she had moved in. He really loved the company of both Piper and Cassandra here. It made him feel so nice.

So I totally dropped the ball. I am so sorry. D:

"Slush got in my shoes," Piper muttered as she started the episode. "And cars kept throwing up waves of it. It sucked." She tucked her knees against her chest and rested her head on the back of the sofa. She felt comfortable, sitting here with him and not having to worry about anything.

It's all good, I had to catch up as well :D

"Augh, my sympathy is over-flowing," he said with a laugh. He leaned back as well, handing the bowl of caramel corn to her so she could take as much as she wanted.

"Shush, you," she said, flinging a piece of popcorn at his nose. "I just traded London slush for New York slush. Or I would have, if I didn't travel by tube-subway, whatever-all the time." She ate some caramel corn as Pete and Myka bickered on screen. "I really like watching these two," she said. "They have a great dynamic. You can tell they really care about each other."

Charles laughed as the popcorn bounced off of his face. Then he turned to the screen and nodded. "I always enjoy it more when actors have chemistry with each other. It's always so painful to watch when they don't."

"I know, right?" she said. "If it's that bad, I usually quit watching. And you can totally tell, the characters have each other's backs. I try to keep people like that close to me, even if it's a kind of short list. Right now, it's...Mum, you, and...that's it, I think." She shrugged. "But that's OK, because you're both very quality people," she added with a smile.

He gave her a sympathetic look and reached out to stroke her hair a little bit. "My list is fairly short too," he admitted. "But like you say, you're all quality people."

Piper wasn't used to people touching her out of the blue. Mostly because no one had for a while, and she wasn't really used to it anymore. But she didn't flinch or back away, she just turned her head and smiled at him. "They always say it's about quality, not quantity, right?" she said. "And we're doing OK."

Charles grinned widely and he continued to stroke her hair. "We really are," he said warmly. He was so glad Cassandra and Piper had come to live with him.

That didn't explain why he leaned in to kiss her though. It was fair to say it surprised him as much as it surprised her.

Whatever Piper had been about to say was cut off when he kissed her. Which was...OK, it was a little odd, not what she'd been expecting. But not a bad thing. She wasn't really sure what to think or do, so she just kissed back.

And she was kissing her back and that was just as surprising.

It had been a long time since he had kissed anyone and it felt nice even if it had come out of nowhere. Because she had kissed him back, he didn't pull away right away. He lifted his hand to brush her cheek and then he pulled back and whispered, "sorry."

It took another minute for her to find her voice before she asked, "Why are you sorry?" Her smile was small and tentative, but her voice didn't shake, and for that she was glad.

"I-" Why was he sorry? Charles licked his lips and then he said, "I don't usually just...kiss my friends without first seeing how they might feel about it."

Her grin widened slightly as she listened. "If you'll notice, I didn't exactly push you away and storm out of the room. You don't...repulse me, or anything like that."

At that, Charles burst out laughing. "Well good!" he said when he was able to speak. At least he wasn't repulsive. "Very glad to know that."

Piper's answering laugh was bright, and she reached out with one finger and tapped him on the nose. "You adorable little man," she said, getting up and heading into the kitchen to make more tea. She put the kettle on to boil and leaned against the doorframe while the burner heated.

As she walked away, Charles watched her, his bottom lip between his teeth. Kissing someone had been nice, but he was so worried if he even tired a relationship he would mess everything up. He always messed everything up.

"Piper!" he jumped up and followed her into the kitchen. "Piper, I shouldn't have done that. It wasn't right."

Piper turned around so fast she almost gave herself whiplash. "Uhm..." she said, struggling to wrap her mind around that. "Why...why do you say that? I'm really not upset, honestly." She tilted her head to one side and looked at him, trying to figure out how everything had suddenly done a 180. "Did I say something?"

"No!" He rushed to say, so she didn't blame herself. He stared at her for a moment and then he shook his head quickly. Stop thinking about how beautiful she looks, Charlie.

He backed up and then hopped backwards up onto the kitchen counter. Immediately he ran his fingers through his hair and sighed. "No, you didn't- It's- Look, I fuck things up. I fuck them up all the time and I don't want to fuck up our friendship."

The kettle chose that moment to start whistling, and it made Piper jump. She pulled it off the stove and stared at the mugs as though they held all the answers she was looking for.

She turned to look at him, tilting her chin up slightly, even as her fingers twisted around and around as she knotted her hands. "You didn't fuck anything up," she finally said. "It takes two people to kiss, and I don't regret it."

"No, I mean-" How could he really explain this without going into depth about things he didn't want to talk about?

"I messed things up with Hank and that was one of my more successful relationships," he said earnestly. "And I won't ever see him again and I don't- I don't want that to happen to us."

She took one of his hands in hers, not sure what to say, but wanting to try and help all the same. "Whatever it is...you can tell me," she said. "I'm not going anywhere."

Charles squeezed his eyes shut and then he held Piper's hand tightly for a moment before letting go. "I can't, Piper. I can't, I'm sorry. But please understand, dear girl, it has nothing to do with you."

Then, because it was awkward and he was uncomfortable, he scuttled off to his room.

Piper started to say 'alright then', but he was out the door before she could even say anything. "What just happened?" she asked the empty kitchen. And then, with a sigh, she retrieved her bottle of whiskey from the cupboard, splashing a generous measure into her tea.
