Entry tags:conchobar mac nessa, marie antoinette

Who: Conchobar and Marie Antoinette
What: Oh? I remember you from before...
When: Thursday morning after a day in court
Where: Just outside his courthouse
Warnings: Conchobar is still good at pretending to be a nice guy...

This was supposed to be his time. His time to shine. To show off his power, prestige. Instead he had had the rug pulled right out from under him. He'd seen it coming, but still Deirdre had pulled a fast one on him. It wasn't as easy as it had been at throwing Naoise to his death. When other immortals were involved then things got a little sticky. In all his searching he couldn't find them. Deirdre was picking up her pieces without leaving any breadcrumbs for him to find. She was getting smarter, he'd applaud her for that.

In time. In time...

Throwing on his suit jacket Conchobar exited the court house. It was time for a morning coffee run before he started shattering lives.

Marie liked to walk and that day, her walk took her past the courthouse. As she passed, she noted someone she recognised and she raised her eyebrows as the man passed in front of her. "Hello?" Marie called, not remembering the man's name. "Hi, I recognise you!"

He'd been in his own head, he'd hardly heard the woman speak. Twisting his head around he looked to see the same well put together woman he'd met so many months ago. And hadn't that ended well? Hello was all she could say?

Throwing on his cheap, charming smile Conchobar greeted her. "Why yes. Don't you remember me?" you should, "We have met before. Marie Antoinette is it?"

Marie met a lot of people, it was surprising she even remembered his face. She did remember he was royalty though. "Uhm...Mac Nessa?" she asked, making a 'I'm so ditzy' face. "I'm sorry! And yes, I'm Marie. How are you?!"

Well, that certainly took longer than he expected. A King forgotten? He refrained from rolling his eyes, but there was a slight grit to his teeth before taking her hand gingerly for a more gentlemanly greeting. "Good morning." He would forgive her for her ditzy behavior this once. "I'm just on my way for a cup of coffee. Would you like to join me?"

"I would love to!" she said brightly. She didn't have to be at her office until that afternoon, and coffee with an attractive man was always a nice weekday distraction. She looped her hand through his arm and grinned.

She made up for her forgetfulness by draping herself on his arm. Having a beautiful, classy woman on his side put him in a better mood. She was crawling her way back to his good side. Smart woman.

He took the lead and walked her about two blocks away. He took his time because it drew attention. Wealthy, attractive and well bred people brought that sort of attention. Everyone else was worthless.

Marie smiled as they walked. She liked the attention as well, though she didn't need it the same way he did. What she liked more was the arm of the attractive man. "What were you doing in the courthouse?" she asked conversationally.

"A judge, remember?" Second strike. Would he let her forget this one? Depended on how she crawled her way out of it. "My first case for the day isn't for another few hours. I needed the caffeine."

Marie looked over at him. "I remember what your job is, I was asking what you were doing. I'm fascinated by courts and things. I was never really allowed to participate when I was alive."

"A woman not allowed? How absurd." It was absured, women had their place as a man's support. His constant ring of approval. She was to be at a man's side, his side as part of his rule. Maybe rules had changed over the years. It was interesting that she seemed fascinated by court and the politics of it, it certainly was more interesting than the ditz. It made him wonder if that was her facade. If it was he'd break it.

Conchobar flattened his tie as he spoke, still taking slow steps. "I have a pro bono case this morning. A waste of time really." It was the worst way to spend a morning.

"It was more because I was the King's Austrian wife. An Austrian in the French court. I was not to be trusted." She shrugged and smiled at him. "Do you have to take pro bono cases, or is it up to you?"

"Women often aren't to be trusted..." He raised a brow pausing as they came to the outside entrance of the cafe. "I take them because they are an easy way to start the morning. They get me fired up for the afternoon. It puts me in a good mood."

Marie stopped dead in her tracks and she raised her eyebrows at Conchobar. Did he just say women weren't to be trusted?! Her eyes narrowed and she ignored the part about pro bono cases.

He had said it was ridiculous for women not to be allowed to discuss law, and then in the next breath, that they weren't to be trusted. Marie had spent her life being treated like she was worthless and now that things had changed, she was not going back to that.

"Please tell me you're joking," she said, ready to turn and leave him there by himself.

Conchobar started to laugh at her reaction. It didn't speak highly of his character, he was losing his charm quickly. Usually, it tended to come out, his rotten core when his hackles were raised. He didn't generally appreciate women, not in the way they deserved unless they gave him a reason. At Marie's defense he stepped back, but only because at her pause she looked like she was ready for a fight. He liked that kind of spirit.

"Yes, I was, bad joke. I'm sorry." He even held a hand to his chest with a slight bow. If she gave the chance he'd raise that bar again. See how far she would take it or if she was worth just leaving alone.

Marie stayed watching him for a moment longer and then she nodded. "Well I don't find it especially funny." If he made another 'joke' like that, she was leaving. She had put up with the patriarchy her entire life, she wasn't doing it any more.
