Μακαρία {Goddess of Blessed Death} ([info]gravegarlands) wrote in [info]nevermore_logs,

WHO: Makaria & Hades
WHEN: Monday mid-morning
WHERE: Hades' place
WHAT: Pouty teenage death deities

Makaria was poking at the cereal in her bowl without much interest when Hades entered the kitchen. Lifting her head Makaria looked at him and then went back to her food, making the milky slop spin around in the bowl.

She'd been thinking for a long time about what she should say to her father, but it never seemed right. But Cocytus had said it would be best to talk to him about it in the end.

So she looked up again and, trying to sound like a reasonable adult, as though they were just two death gods having a conversation, she said, "I don't think that it's fair for you make commands about who I am or aren't allowed to spend time with."

He'd come in to get a tray for Persephone, so she could wake and have breakfast waiting for her, and to discus plans for this entire Christmas debacle. He wasn't a being who enjoyed celebrations, but Persephone did. And he was still trying to make her happy.

He'd taken a cup of coffee from one of the shades, intend to sit with his daughter, and blinked at her comment, trying to remember when he'd said that. Then he remembered the bit with Theseus and sat down.

"I told Theseus to stay away from you, never you to stay away from him. His record speaks for himself. I don't want you to get hurt by him."

"No one is going to hurt me." It was said with the sort of assurance that could only come from someone who had never been hurt before by anything or anyone. Mortals had hurt her feelings since she came to the surface, but Makaria had dealt with that just fine. It was upsetting, yes, but it seemed to be just the way people dealt with each other. As for anything else a person could do to her, Makaria couldn't even grasp the idea. She didn't fear death. She was death!

He tilted his head as he looked at her, "Yet. You have more faith in humanity if you think that trend will continue. My endeavors are to ensure you keep such faith. The rules here are different from the ones Below." He sighed, "you trust, too easily. I do not wish to see you harmed. Physically, or otherwise."

"Papa," Makaria said with a sigh of her own. "Even if someone were to kill me, I'd just return below again. What could be so bad about that?" Dying didn't seem like it could be a terrible thing, even though people feared it. Maybe it was because it hurt? But how bad could physical pain become? Makaria wasn't quite sure. She'd hurt herself a few times on the surface - stubbing her toes, running into things - and they'd hurt quite a lot at the time, but after that it was fine. "But it's not going to happen anyway, because none of my heroes would ever harm me. They're mine."

"Below, yes they are." He set his hands on the table, wishing she could understand, and also not wishing to ruin her view of the world. It was complicated. "We are not Below. They do not consider themselves yours here. They consider themselves no ones but their own. They will not heed any command."

"And there are far worse things they could do then just kill you child. Even then, I wouldn't want anyone to kill you. I don't care if you go Below. You're my daughter." He sighed and shifted. "You want to experience this world and I'm fine with that. But with all the good comes all of the bad. When Ares kissed you, do you really think he'd have stopped if you hadn't been dragged away from your friends? Do you really think that if any of my brothers find you, they'll not try and harm you, for the simple fact that you're my child? And that's not even mentioning the other Pantheons."

Makaria wasn't sure that Hades was right about her heroes not still respecting her. She was the queen of the isles and they were always good to her before. Nothing should have changed.

"I'm sure Ares would have stopped if I'd asked him too," Makaria said, thinking about it. "Besides, the kissing... it wasn't horrible. And I don't see why anyone would hurt me when I only try to be nice to them."

He set his fingers on his forehead. She didn't understand and he couldn't force understanding on her either. But he wasn't willing to let the world show her it's ugly side either. He wanted her to keep her innocence. In more ways then one.

"He wouldn't have though. Olympians do not take no for an answer." He ran his fingers through his hair, "your mother thought like you once. I do not want to see you get harmed Makaria. I don't give you rules so I can control every aspect of your life. I am trying to protect you. I have seen the ugliness of this world. I have a darker turn to me, and your mother is proof of that. I could have gone to Demeter and told her of my wishes. I didn't. I did what I liked and to this day your mother has a certain amount of fear for me. I don't want that to happen to you."

"Demeter wouldn't have let you," Makaria said with a shake of her head, reaching out to pat his hand awkwardly. "She... doesn't like you very much." She said this warily, as though she was worried Hades might not have noticed that Demeter hated him.

"I just don't want to kept away from the world anymore," Makaria said to him sadly. "I want to discover new things and I want you to treat me like I'm an adult, not just your daughter."

He took her hand, "Demeter hates me," he said fairly, "but she didn't always hate me you know. We were close. She was, alongside Hestia, the sister I was closest to. We were often distant from one another, our realms never overlapped, but I was closer to her then many know. I could have stood a chance. I chose to be selfish. I ruined my relationship with my sister in the progress." And he did regret that, even if he felt Demeter couldn't let the past go.

That was going to be fun when he would start having a relationship with Kore when spring came.

"And I am not keeping you from the world nor treating you any less then an adult Makaria." Gently he squeezed her hand, "but you are not familiar with it. Do you know how many young girls I find on the table when I go to the mortuary?" He tilted his head, "All of them who thought the world would not harm them? Forgive me if I do not want to get that call."

Makaria couldn't actually imagine Demeter and Hades getting along, but she supposed he wouldn't lie to her. She also couldn't imagine not getting along with Melinoe anymore.

Makaria frowned. She didn't want to hurt her father, but she didn't want to be hidden from the world either. "Then," she reasoned, "isn't it better that I'm out in the world with my heroes. I know that you don't trust Theseus, but I trust him."

A trust he was sure he would break. But they were at a stalemate and if he wished to be fair for his family he couldn't press the issue. Even though he wanted to.

He released her hand and sighed. "Alright. I trust you and your judgement. But I can't stop worrying. I worry for all of you." Maybe Cerberus not as much, but his companion had the advantage of being able to turn into a beast capable of mauling people, so there was that. "I won't stop you from having whatever friends you feel suit you."

Feeling a topic change was needed he leaned back into the chair, "your mother intends to take you out for decorations. She wants to do something for the holiday. I'll ask what I asked her, nothing too bright."

"I worry about you as well," Makaria told him. "But thank you, papa. It means a lot to me."

Makaria smiled at the idea of decorations. "For Christmas?" Makaria asked, just to make sure. "Are we going to celebrate it?" Then, with a little frown, she added, "but... we're not Christians. They say it's to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ."

He waved his hand, "sort of. We do not celebrate that one's birth, because we are not Christians. But the holiday has traces of the celebrations we held back in Greece. So we'll probably do that, and enjoy family." He shrugged, "one can enjoy the holiday without having to truly celebrate it. Same thing we do with Hallow's Eve."

"Okay," Makaria smiled cheerfully. "That sounds nice then. Persephone always picks pretty things."

"You girls can make a day of it." He rose as the platter was done and took it from the shade. "I'm going to go wake your mother. And I am sorry if I upset you. All I do is out of love. I hope you know that."

Makaria's smile was warm and she nodded. "I know," she said to him, "and I love you too, papa."
